Oceanic Inferno: Global Seas Reach Record July Temperatures Amidst Europe’s Scorching Summer

LONDON, UK – The world’s oceans are experiencing unprecedented warming, with global sea surface temperatures reaching a record high for July, according to data released by the EU’s Copernicus climate change service. This oceanic heatwave coincides with a devastating and prolonged heatwave gripping Europe, highlighting the escalating impacts of climate breakdown.

The Atlantic coast and western Mediterranean have been particularly affected, with sea surface temperatures hitting new July records and severe marine heatwaves roiling the waters. Globally, outside the polar regions, the average sea surface temperature in July surpassed the previous record set just last year in 2023.

While surface air temperatures globally in July 2026 were marginally cooler than July 2024 (by a mere 0.01C), scientists are considering both months as the joint-second warmest Julys on record, underscoring a persistent trend of extreme heat.

Western Europe has endured its hottest June-July period on record, with "exceptional" heat fueling devastating wildfires across the Mediterranean. Copernicus reported that the first two summer months of 2026 were 2.79C hotter than usual, shattering the previous record from four years prior and demonstrating the "exceptional persistence of heat" since the season began.

Central Europe is currently grappling with a severe heatwave, resulting in new national temperature records in countries like Austria and Slovakia. This marks the latest chapter in a scorching summer that has parched vegetation and left the continent vulnerable to widespread conflagrations.

Samantha Burgess, a climate scientist at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, emphasized that this summer serves as "a clear example" of how climate breakdown intensifies mutually reinforcing extreme weather events. “As persistent high-pressure systems trapped heat over western Europe, the extreme temperatures also amplified widespread drought,” she stated. “As soils dry out, they lose their ability to provide natural cooling, allowing heat to build more readily.”

July temperatures per year

Fuelled by fossil fuel pollution, Europe has experienced a relentless string of heatwaves since late spring. A particularly brutal heatwave at the end of June is estimated to have caused over 10,000 deaths.

Copernicus reported that widespread dryness observed in May and June intensified last month, with exceptionally low rainfall and soil moisture across much of western Europe. This severe drought has led to critically low river flows, impacting water supply, irrigation, and power plants in affected regions including France, Spain, and parts of Germany and the UK. The scarcity of cooling water forced the temporary shutdown of two coal-fired power plants in Poland and, for the first time in its 44-year history, Hungary’s sole nuclear power plant.

The economic repercussions of these extreme weather events are substantial. Early estimates suggest the June heatwave alone cost European grain farmers €2 billion in lost crops. Economists warn that long-term damage from persistent droughts can far exceed short-term losses. A new working paper by the CMCC European Institute on Economics revealed that the mega-drought of 2015-18 cost Europe an staggering €439 billion, with significant but fleeting impacts on agriculture and prolonged, albeit lesser, effects on manufacturing and construction. The researchers argue that conventional loss estimation methods often underestimate drought-related economic damage by failing to account for multi-year compounding effects.

Marta Mastropietro, a researcher at CMCC and the Polytechnic University of Milan, and lead author of the study, explained: “Even a single dry year causes real economic damage, but a persistent drought is different: its effects can compound across sectors and keep accumulating for years afterward. That intersection between compounding and long-lasting impacts is what conventional impact estimates tend to miss.”

The European Forest Fire Information System indicates that approximately half a million hectares have burned across the EU since the beginning of the year. This widespread burning of vegetation has contributed to above-average pollution due to thick smoke. The prevailing hot, dry, and windy conditions have created an unprecedented severity of wildfires for this time of year, making containment efforts increasingly challenging.

Víctor Resco de Dios, a professor of forestry engineering at the University of Lleida, emphasized the escalating threat posed by climate change: “Climate change is creating increasingly favourable conditions for the development of mega-wildfires.” While acknowledging the severity, he offered a glimmer of hope: “The good news is that through vegetation management and urban planning we can largely mitigate the problem. However, we must be clear about one thing: what seems extreme to us today will be remarkably benign in a few decades if we continue to fail to take the necessary adaptive measures.”
