Massive Flash Floods Devastate Nepal-Tibet Border; Over 800 Missing Including Scores of Indians
A catastrophic deluge along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers has left a trail of destruction, with hundreds still unaccounted for as rescue teams battle treacherous conditions.
A massive flash flood and a series of high-intensity mudslides have ravaged the Nepal-Tibet border, claiming at least 160 lives and leaving hundreds more missing in one of the region’s worst natural disasters in recent memory. Triggered by a sudden surge of water—reportedly rising 30 feet in height—the disaster swept through vital mountain settlements, wiping out hydropower infrastructure and cutting off established pilgrimage routes.
A Multination Tragedy
Authorities are currently struggling to track the status of 844 individuals who remain missing. Among those untraced are 113 Nepali citizens and a staggering 466 foreign nationals from 28 countries. The toll on the Indian community has been particularly heavy, with at least 133 Indian nationals, including 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), confirmed among the missing.
Many of the victims were Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims who were either in the process of crossing the border or traveling through the region when the deluge struck on Wednesday morning. The international scope of the crisis is evident in the list of the missing, which includes 54 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, 24 Canadians, 19 Malaysians, and 8 Koreans.
The sheer force of the floodwaters is underscored by the recovery of 33 bodies as far as 150 kilometers downstream in Chitwan, highlighting the unprecedented velocity of the river.
Infrastructure and Rescue Operations
The disaster has crippled infrastructure in the northern and central regions of Nepal. Preliminary government assessments indicate that at least 19 bridges and 40 kilometers of road have been destroyed. Additionally, 13 hydropower projects, including the 20MW Langtang Khola plant, have been inundated, and approximately 200 trucks have been lost to the torrent.
Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, informed parliament that security forces have also suffered significant losses, with 29 police personnel and 44 soldiers still missing after their barracks in Rasuwa were swept away.
In response, the Nepali government has declared the hardest-hit areas as disaster-hit zones for the next three months, guaranteeing free medical treatment for survivors. Prime Minister Shah has appealed for national unity as the Nepali Army, the Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force deploy helicopters, drones, and specialized ground teams to the remote, mud-choked terrain.
International Response
Across the border in Tibet’s Gyirong county, Chinese authorities have reported three deaths and 265 missing. President Xi Jinping has called for “all-out efforts” in the search-and-rescue mission.
The humanitarian crisis has prompted a high-alert response, with officials setting up emergency support systems for families of the victims. As the search for the deadly Nepal deluge victims continues, rescue personnel remain hindered by hazardous weather, collapsed roads, and critically high water levels in the affected river corridors.
