COLOMBO – India’s hopes of wrapping up the Sri Lankan first innings early on Day 3 were thwarted by a resilient display from the hosts’ lower order, as Sonal Dinusha and Pasindu Sooriyabandara spearheaded a spirited fightback in the second Test.
By the time rain and deteriorating light forced an early stumps, Sri Lanka had reached 265/8. While the hosts remain 38 runs adrift of avoiding the follow-on, the stubbornness shown by the tail has injected a new sense of tension into a match that India appeared to be dominating just a few hours earlier.
Dinusha the Anchor
Sonal Dinusha emerged as the undisputed hero for the home side. Remaining unbeaten on 85, Dinusha continued his exceptional form throughout the series, recording his third score of 50 or more in as many innings. His innings was a masterclass in patience, spanning 201 minutes against a potent Indian bowling attack.
Dinusha’s ability to shepherd the lower order proved vital; he stitched together a crucial 57-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha for the eighth wicket and added an unbroken 35 runs with Lahiru Kumara (8 not out) before play was suspended. His performance underscored a recurring issue for the Indian side—a historical struggle to quickly dismantle the tail-end opposition once the top order is cleared.
A Rollercoaster Day
India looked firmly in the driver’s seat mid-afternoon. Having reduced Sri Lanka to 216/7 by the tea interval, the tourists seemed poised to enforce a quick follow-on. Key contributions from the Indian attack included Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed the scalp of the impressive Pasindu Sooriyabandara for 80, and Manav Suthar, who accounted for skipper Dhananjaya de Silva. Mohammed Siraj also chipped in, finding the edge of Niroshan Dickwella’s bat, with wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel completing the catch.
Earlier in the day, the momentum had briefly swung toward Sri Lanka when Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis put together a gritty 87-run stand. Sooriyabandara, featuring in just his second Test, displayed remarkable composure to bring up his maiden half-century in 76 balls. Mendis provided aggressive support, including a towering six off Suthar, before falling to a short-ball trap set by Prasidh Krishna.

While India regained control during the middle session, the failure to clear the remaining two wickets before the weather intervened has kept the door slightly ajar for the Sri Lankans.
As the match heads into the fourth day, the primary objective for the Indian bowlers will be to polish off the final two wickets as quickly as possible. Having missed several opportunities to apply the finishing touches on Saturday, the tourists will be eager to avoid further delays in their pursuit of victory in this 2nd Test series.
