Barcelona Captain Ronald Araujo Calls Liverpool Move “Ideal” for Career Progression
Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has described his move to Liverpool as the “ideal” decision at this stage of his career after the Uruguay defender completed a season-long loan to the Premier League club on Monday.
The 27-year-old joins Liverpool for the 2026-27 season after agreeing to take a pay cut to facilitate the move. The deal also includes an option for Liverpool to sign Araujo permanently for a pre-agreed fee reportedly worth £47 million ($63 million), should his spell at Anfield prove successful.
Liverpool confirmed the deal in a statement, noting that the move was subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance. Araujo, who will proudly wear the No. 33 shirt, has made more than 200 appearances for Barcelona since breaking into the first team, showcasing his significant experience at the highest level of European football.
‘It was the right move at the right time’
Araujo, who was appointed Barcelona captain in January, expressed his belief that the opportunity to join Liverpool arrived at a pivotal moment in his professional journey.
“It was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. It was a move that was necessary for me to take,” Araujo told Liverpool’s official website, highlighting the strategic nature of his decision.
“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. I’m super happy to be here and excited to get started.”
The highly-rated defender also conveyed his immense excitement at becoming part of a club with Liverpool’s illustrious history and passionate fanbase.
“I cannot wait to get started. I am very, very happy,” he enthused. “I am excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I am excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I am very motivated and really up for getting going.”
Araujo reiterated his satisfaction with the decision, stating: “As I say, I am super-happy to be here and excited to get started. I am glad about the interest, and it was the right move at the right time.”
Liverpool Strengthen Defensive Options Amidst Injury Concerns
Araujo’s arrival significantly bolsters Liverpool’s defensive depth. The versatile Uruguay international is highly capable of operating effectively in both the centre-back and right-back positions, offering crucial tactical flexibility to manager Jürgen Klopp.
This strategic acquisition follows the departure of Ibrahima Konate at the end of his contract and comes amidst ongoing injury concerns, particularly at right-back. With Joe Gomez not expected to be fit for the commencement of the new Premier League campaign, Araujo’s presence addresses a pressing need for an experienced and robust defender within the squad.
Araujo brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to Anfield. He has amassed 213 appearances for Barcelona, finding the net 14 times, and has been instrumental in the Catalan club’s success, contributing to three La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and three Spanish Super Cups.
On the international stage, he has earned 27 caps for the Uruguay national team, further underlining his pedigree.
Having already participated in Barcelona’s pre-season preparations, Araujo is understood to be in peak physical condition and is anticipated to integrate seamlessly into Liverpool’s squad training this week, poised to make an immediate impact for the Reds.
