FC Goa Crashes Out of AFC Champions League Two After 0-3 Loss to FC Arkadag
Arkadag, Turkmenistan – FC Goa’s journey in the AFC Champions League Two concluded abruptly on Wednesday, as they suffered a decisive 0-3 defeat against Turkmenistan’s FC Arkadag in the preliminary round at the Arkadag Stadium. The Indian outfit, after a resilient goalless first half, succumbed to a relentless second-half surge from their opponents, who netted all three goals within a mere 17-minute spell.
This result means that FC Goa’s Asian campaign will now shift focus to the AFC Challenge League, the continent’s third-tier club competition, offering them another opportunity to leave their mark on the continental stage.
Arkadag Dominates Second Half to Secure Victory
From the outset, FC Arkadag demonstrated their attacking intent, frequently utilizing their wide players to generate offensive opportunities. FC Goa’s goalkeeper, Bob Jackson Raj, was a busy man throughout the first half, making a series of crucial saves that kept his side’s hopes alive. He notably denied Begench Akmammedov from close range early on, quickly recovering to thwart Abdy Basimow’s follow-up attempt.
Raj’s heroics continued in the 26th minute, as he produced a diving save to prevent Bashimov’s header from a corner kick from crossing the goal line. Despite Arkadag’s pressure, FC Goa managed to carve out their best first-half chance in the 42nd minute from a set-piece. Francisco Feuillassier’s well-placed delivery found the head of defender Sandesh Jhingan, but his glancing header unfortunately veered wide of the target.
Arkadag also squandered a late opportunity before the interval when Rahman Myratberdiýew’s ambitious overhead kick sailed over the bar, leaving the score deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the break.
Three Quick Goals Seal FC Goa’s Fate
The second half, however, told a different story. Arkadag finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Yazgylych Gurbanov’s cross into a crowded penalty area found Didar Durdyyew, whose effort managed to slip through Raj’s hands and trickle over the line, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Just seven minutes later, Rahman Myratberdiýew doubled Arkadag’s advantage. Capitalizing on a loose ball, he raced into the box with determination and calmly slotted the ball past the advancing goalkeeper, leaving FC Goa with an uphill battle.
The decisive blow came in the 75th minute when Arzuwguly Sapargulyyew delivered a moment of brilliance. He executed a superb free-kick, curling the ball precisely into the top-right corner of the net, effectively sealing FC Arkadag’s victory and extinguishing any lingering hopes for the Indian side.
FC Goa struggled to mount a significant response in the final quarter of the match as Arkadag comfortably protected their substantial lead. With this emphatic win, the Turkmenistan club progresses to the AFC Champions League Two 2026-27 group stage. The draw for this stage is eagerly anticipated and scheduled to take place on August 18 in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, FC Goa will now regroup and channel their focus towards their upcoming challenges in the AFC Challenge League, aiming to make a deeper run in the continent’s third-tier competition.
