Varma initially expressed doubts about Oberoi’s polished demeanor, believing he lacked the grit required for the character. This skepticism prompted Oberoi to embark on a transformative journey, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the craft.
Oberoi revealed in an interview with The Indian Express that, immediately after his meeting with Varma, he moved into a small rented room, or ‘kholi,’ in a Mumbai chawl. For three weeks, he immersed himself in this environment, not only living there but also subtly altering his posture, daily habits, and even collaborating with a local photographer to cultivate the authentic visual style for Chandu. This immersive experience allowed him to shed his previous image and fully inhabit the street-hardened persona Varma sought.
This commitment to earning his roles wasn’t a new concept for Oberoi. He candidly shared that he had deliberately turned down a ready-made launchpad offered by his father, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi. He chose to endure 18 months of struggle and rejection, driven by a strong desire to forge his own path in the competitive film industry. "I walked away from that opportunity, struggled for 18 months after that, and faced a lot of rejection, but I am proud of that choice," Oberoi stated, reflecting on his decision.
