Negotiations for a sequel to the blockbuster film ‘Barbie’ have reportedly stalled due to significant financial demands from the original creative team. Despite the 2023 movie’s monumental success, talks between Warner Bros. and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, along with director Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach, have reportedly reached an impasse.
Sources indicate that Warner Bros. has presented over six offers to the team over the past three years, all of which have been rejected. The original ‘Barbie’, which saw Robbie and Gosling paint the box office pink, became Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing film in history, raking in over $1.4 billion worldwide.
The current sticking point centers on requests for substantial fee hikes and upfront compensation. Ryan Gosling, who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ken, is reportedly seeking $20 million to return for a sequel. Margot Robbie’s earnings from the first film were initially projected at around $50 million in salary and backend compensation, with later reports suggesting her final compensation significantly exceeded that figure. Similarly, Greta Gerwig is also believed to have earned tens of millions from the original movie. The demands for the potential sequel represent a significant increase over these already impressive figures.
While the creative team is reportedly not seeking a share of box-office revenue before the studio recoups its production costs, a source close to the negotiations told Variety that each member is pursuing “unprecedented compensation.” The agency representing Gerwig, Baumbach, Robbie, and Gosling, CAA, has not yet submitted a counteroffer to Warner Bros.’ latest proposal.
Despite the financial hurdles, there is a widely held belief within Hollywood that the original creative team’s value is immense following the first film’s extraordinary success. A source indicated that a sequel would not move forward unless Warner Bros. agrees to their terms.
