The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has initiated a significant change in its postgraduate offerings, introducing a one-year Master’s degree pathway specifically designed for students who have completed a four-year undergraduate program (FYUP). This innovative approach allows graduates to achieve a Master’s qualification in half the time traditionally required, presenting a compelling alternative to the standard two-year postgraduate programs. This strategic move aligns seamlessly with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for greater flexibility in academic pathways, the implementation of credit-based learning systems, and the promotion of the four-year undergraduate model.
Under this new framework, IGNOU has launched nine distinct postgraduate programs. These include M.A. Economics, M.A. Sociology, M.A. History, M.Com., M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication, M.A. English, M.A. Hindi, M.A. Sanskrit, and M.A. Urdu. These diverse offerings span various disciplines within arts, commerce, and humanities, providing a wide array of choices for eligible students. For individuals who have already dedicated four years to their undergraduate studies, this accelerated postgraduate route offers substantial benefits. It enables them to acquire a Master’s degree more quickly, facilitating earlier entry into the professional workforce, preparation for competitive examinations, engagement in research endeavors, or the pursuit of further academic goals without the additional two-year commitment typically associated with a postgraduate degree. Coinciding with this major academic restructuring, IGNOU has also extended the re-registration deadline for the July 2026 academic session. Both fresh admissions and the re-registration process for existing students can now be completed until August 16, 2026. This extension applies to a wide range of programs offered through both the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes, providing ample opportunity for prospective and current students to secure their academic future. It is crucial for existing IGNOU students to complete their re-registration for the upcoming year or semester within this revised timeframe.
