Mother jailed for baby daughter's hairdryer burns death

A deeply disturbing case of infanticide has concluded with a six-year prison sentence for a mother who caused the death of her three-month-old daughter. Courtney Gartshore, aged 28, was found guilty of culpable homicide after subjecting baby Dahlia-Rose to what the court described as "significant and sustained heat" using a hairdryer on her head and body.

The tragic incident unfolded in September 2023 at a property located in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire. Despite the immediate response of emergency services, their efforts were in vain, and the infant was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent trial at the High Court in Aberdeen in July led to Gartshore’s conviction, revealing the horrific circumstances surrounding Dahlia-Rose’s demise.

During the sentencing hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, which lasted approximately 25 minutes, Gartshore appeared via videolink, visibly distressed and tearful. Judge Simon Collins KC presided over the proceedings, characterizing the case as "uniquely disturbing and distressing," further adding that it was "tragic as well as terrible." The judge underscored the gravity of her actions, emphasizing that Gartshore would forever bear the burden of knowing she was directly responsible for her daughter’s untimely death. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of child neglect and abuse, prompting renewed discussions on the welfare and protection of vulnerable infants.
