India’s big semiconductor push: PM Modi says 7-8 plants coming up; stresses self-reliance in chips

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a monumental stride in India’s technological ambitions, revealing that the nation has commenced operations at three semiconductor manufacturing facilities. This significant development, articulated during his address from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day celebrations, underscores India’s accelerating journey towards technological self-reliance. He further elaborated that the country anticipates an additional seven to eight such plants to become operational within the next few years, solidifying its position in the global semiconductor landscape.

This ambitious push is spearheaded by the second phase of India’s semiconductor mission, an initiative backed by a substantial financial outlay exceeding Rs 1.27 lakh crore. This expanded investment is strategically designed to cultivate a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. The Prime Minister emphasized the omnipresence of semiconductor chips in contemporary life, noting their indispensable role across a vast spectrum of industries, from consumer electronics and advanced healthcare systems to transportation and nearly every facet of modern technology.

Modi highlighted that while semiconductors have been a topic of national discussion for many years, India previously lacked the large-scale manufacturing capabilities required to meet its growing demands. The current government, he asserted, has taken decisive action to rectify this, establishing domestic production facilities. The fact that three plants are already in commercial production and actively exporting their products marks a pivotal moment in India’s industrial evolution.

India’s strategic approach to semiconductor development has unfolded in two distinct phases. The initial phase, termed Semicon 1.0, was launched with an allocation of Rs 76,000 crore. This has now been followed by the more expansive Semicon 2.0, which received Union Cabinet approval with a considerably larger investment of Rs 1,27,500 crore. To date, the government has given its stamp of approval to a total of 12 semiconductor projects, attracting investment commitments surpassing Rs 1.64 lakh crore. The swift establishment and operationalization of three manufacturing units within this framework signal a strong momentum towards achieving India’s long-term goals of technological independence and becoming a significant player in the global semiconductor market. This advancement is crucial for India’s broader economic aspirations and its vision for business growth and innovation.
