For decades, users have been downloading Disk Image files, commonly known as DMGs, then meticulously mounting these virtual disks, and manually dragging the application icon from the mounted image into their Applications folder. Following this, an additional layer of housekeeping is required: carefully unmounting the virtual disk to avoid clutter and finally deleting the original DMG file. This entire procedure, while functional, is undeniably convoluted and a remnant of a bygone era.
While this method might have been considered streamlined and innovative back in 2001 with the introduction of Mac OS X, a quarter of a century later, it feels significantly outdated. The digital landscape has evolved dramatically, and users rightly expect a more intuitive and less labor-intensive approach to software installation. Recognizing this persistent annoyance, developer Jeff Schumann took matters into his own hands and created EasyDMG.
EasyDMG is a completely free application designed to automate and simplify this cumbersome process. Endearingly featuring a hamster mascot and the motto “Created out of spite,” the tool aims to rectify what Schumann perceived as a long-standing oversight in macOS. With EasyDMG installed, the intention is that users can simply double-click a DMG file, and the application will handle all the underlying complexities, effectively transforming the installation into the seamless experience it arguably should have always been.
To begin utilizing EasyDMG’s conveniences, a brief initial setup is required. Users will first need to download the application itself and, ironically, install it using the very same “installation dance” it is designed to circumvent. However, this is intended to be the final time a user needs to perform these manual steps for EasyDMG. Following installation, the crucial next step is to designate EasyDMG as the default application for opening DMG files. This can be easily accomplished through a dedicated button conveniently located within EasyDMG’s settings, streamlining the configuration process.
Once these initial steps are completed, the user experience dramatically improves. The next time a software installation necessitates a DMG file, instead of the familiar virtual disk appearing, EasyDMG will take over. A clear window, complete with a progress bar, will then guide the user through the automated process. This progress bar will indicate each stage of the installation, from the initial mounting of the virtual disk to the verification of the application’s integrity, and finally, the actual placement of the software into the Applications folder. This intelligent automation alleviates the repetitive and manual steps, allowing users to install software with significantly less friction.
