Iran-US war latest: Tehran’s army chief tells Trump ‘we’ll break your legs’ and places $30k bounty on US soldiers

Admiral Brad Cooper, the head of US Central Command, recently lauded the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln following his visit to the aircraft carrier. His statements, made on Sunday, praised the crew’s “resilience” and described the visit as “awe-inspiring,” coming amidst growing concerns about mental health and deteriorating conditions aboard the vessel.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has been at sea for over 200 consecutive days, a modern-day record that has prompted Democratic lawmakers to demand answers. Families of the sailors stationed on the carrier have voiced significant worries about the worsening living and working conditions. Despite these concerns, Admiral Cooper asserted in a social media statement that the Lincoln reported the lowest number of mental health cases among the Navy’s eleven active aircraft carriers. He specifically commended the carrier’s leadership for their proactive approach to prioritizing mental health and fostering crew resilience. The USS Abraham Lincoln departed its home port of San Diego in November and was subsequently redeployed to the Middle East to support US military operations, particularly in the ongoing conflict with Iran. The aircraft carrier currently accommodates approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines.

In parallel diplomatic efforts, US envoys, including President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Nickolay Mladenov, Trump’s Board of Peace envoy for Gaza, engaged in crucial talks in Cairo on Sunday. These meetings involved Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators and aimed to advance President Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan, even as Israeli airstrikes continued in the enclave. Hamas officials were reportedly present at some of these discussions, both with the mediators and directly with Trump’s envoys. A senior Israeli official indicated that Kushner and Mladenov are scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. Netanyahu had previously deemed Trump’s latest roadmap for Gaza peace “unacceptable” on August 9th.

Two Israeli sources informed ABC News that Jared Kushner’s meeting with Netanyahu on Monday will address Gaza and other pertinent regional issues. Earlier discussions saw Kushner pressing Hamas leaders to commit to disarmament, as reported by Axios. Sources close to the talks suggested that Kushner sought “concrete, verifiable steps” from Hamas to demonstrate their commitment to disarming. Other key figures present at these discussions in Egypt included Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s political leader; Hassan Rashad, Egyptian intelligence chief; Ali al-Thawadi, a Qatari diplomat; and a Turkish official. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Nickolay Mladenov were also reportedly in attendance. These diplomatic efforts represent a renewed push to salvage a 15-point, US-backed roadmap that calls for Hamas to disarm in Gaza and for Israel to withdraw its forces from the Palestinian territory. The survival of approximately 2 million people in Gaza and the reconstruction of the densely populated enclave, largely under Israeli control since a ceasefire halted major military operations over ten months ago, hinge on the success of these negotiations. A previous meeting last year involving Kushner, fellow envoy Steve Witkoff, and Hamas leaders in Egypt had been instrumental in securing the initial ceasefire, which has since faltered primarily over the disarmament clause.

Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Petroleum engineering professor Siddharth Misra of Texas A&M University cautioned CNBC that repeated rapid drawdowns of crude oil, necessary for the ongoing military conflict, could damage the underground caverns holding the reserves. This is due to the process of pumping fresh water into the caverns to force oil to the surface, which, when done frequently, can erode the salt walls of these storage facilities.

Amidst these regional developments, Pope Leo XIV issued a strong appeal on Sunday for an end to violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. In a statement posted on X, Pope Leo urged the international community to actively work towards advancing a two-state solution to achieve a just and lasting peace. This call comes as White House officials have pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to openly condemn a settler-led siege of a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank. The ongoing blockade of homes in the village of Qusra by settlers, described by human rights organizations as an organized effort to claim territory intended for a future Palestinian state, has drawn rare public criticism from Washington. US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, a known proponent of Jewish settlement in the West Bank, even referred to the settlers surrounding a Palestinian residence as “Israeli terrorists,” highlighting the escalating tensions in the region.

Finally, an Iranian military official accused Qatar on Sunday of delaying an investigation into the fate of Iranian pilots that Tehran claims are being held in Qatar. Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of the Committee for the Search for Missing Persons of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, stated that an Iranian air force and fact-finding team had been waiting for months to enter Qatar. Qatar, however, denies holding any pilots. Baqerzadeh criticized Qatari officials for repeatedly stalling the investigation and preventing the pilots’ return to Iran, calling for the urgent intervention of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the matter.
