No Sony Characters in Fortnite's Big Gaming Celebration Season

The highly anticipated “Override” season in Fortnite, kicking off on August 20th, promises a grand celebration of various iconic gaming franchises. However, despite previous collaborations, Sony’s flagship characters like Kratos from God of War and Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn are notably absent from the initial promotional trailer for this event. While it’s conceivable these beloved PlayStation figures could make a return to the Item Shop at some point during the season, there has been no official confirmation regarding their potential reappearance.

Instead, the “Override” season will prominently feature a diverse roster of characters and inspirations from other celebrated gaming universes. Players can look forward to the lightning-fast presence of Sonic the Hedgehog, as previously rumored, bringing his iconic speed to the island. Alongside him, Bomberman, the classic puzzle-action hero, and Joker from Persona 5 are confirmed to be joining the fray, suggesting not only character skins but also potential weapon and gameplay mechanics inspired by their respective games.

The celebration extends even further, with classic titles like Tetris and Pac-Man also making an appearance, hinting at unique in-game elements or challenges. Fans of SEGA’s blue blur will also notice island design elements, such as loop-the-loops, directly inspired by Sonic’s adventurous world. A curious nod to gaming history is also included with an apparent reference to Jazz Jackrabbit, a title developed by Epic Games itself, adding a touch of self-referential humor to the festivities.

Interestingly, while Crash Bandicoot and Spyro, both deeply rooted in PlayStation’s early history, will be featured, it’s important to remember that their ownership now resides with Microsoft. This highlights the evolving landscape of intellectual property in the gaming industry.

From a personal perspective, the breadth of this season’s collaborations makes it genuinely enticing, sparking a renewed interest in diving back into the world of Fortnite after a considerable hiatus. However, the absence of prominent PlayStation characters at the outset feels like a missed opportunity for Sony to capitalize on this expansive gaming celebration. One can only speculate if PlayStation intends to make a more significant impact later in the season, perhaps with unexpected character drops or exclusive content, to truly solidify its presence within this monumental gaming crossover. Regardless, the “Override” season promises an exciting and varied experience for gaming enthusiasts worldwide.
