'We'll have to follow medical advice': Pakistan captain Babar Azam doubtful for England opener | Cricket News

Pakistan Captain Babar Azam’s Availability in Doubt for England Test Opener

LEEDS, England – Pakistan’s preparations for their highly anticipated Test series against England have been clouded by uncertainty surrounding the fitness of their charismatic captain, Babar Azam. With the first Test set to commence at Headingley on Wednesday, Azam remains a significant doubt as he continues to recover from a persistent finger injury.

The elegant right-handed batsman, crucial to Pakistan’s batting lineup, only managed a brief batting session during the team’s initial practice at the venue on Monday. This limited participation has fueled concerns within the squad and among fans alike.

Azam’s injury woes began during the second Test against the West Indies, where he first sustained damage to his right hand. Compounding the issue, he was struck on the very same hand during Pakistan’s warm-up match against a Professional County Club Select XI in Beckenham last week, exacerbating the existing problem.

Veteran Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas acknowledged the precarious situation, stating that a final decision on the captain’s availability would be made closer to match day. "Whether he plays or not will be a decision taken on match day," Abbas was quoted as saying by AFP. "He did a few throw-downs and some batting practice today. But we’ll have to follow medical advice for it." This emphasis on medical guidance underscores the seriousness of Azam’s condition and the team’s cautious approach.

The potential absence of Babar Azam would undoubtedly be a significant blow for Pakistan. His leadership, calm demeanor, and prolific run-scoring ability are integral to the team’s strategy, especially in challenging English conditions. The team management will be closely monitoring his recovery in the coming days, hoping for a positive medical assessment that would allow him to lead his side from the front.

Masood Shows Promising Signs of Recovery

Adding to Pakistan’s injury concerns, opening batter Shan Masood has also been battling a finger fracture sustained during the first Test against the West Indies, which forced him to miss the subsequent match. However, there appears to be more optimism regarding his recovery.

Despite not featuring in the Beckenham warm-up, Masood returned to full training at Headingley on Monday, successfully completing the entire session. This is a positive sign for the Pakistan camp, which will be eager to have their experienced opener back at the top of the order.

"With Shan, too, we’re just going to rely on the medical advice," Abbas confirmed, indicating the team’s continued reliance on expert medical opinions. "Shan practised for the whole session and looked very good."

As the clock ticks down to the first ball at Headingley, Pakistan will be fervently hoping for favorable medical reports for both Babar Azam and Shan Masood. Their presence would provide a much-needed boost to the team’s morale and batting strength as they aim to make a strong start to the Test series against a formidable England side. The next 24 hours will be critical in determining the final lineup for what promises to be an enthralling contest.
