Indian Football Legend Isaiah Arumainayagam Finally Receives Long-Overdue Lifetime Award

Bengaluru, India – After decades of captivating audiences with his exceptional skills on the pitch, legendary Indian footballer Isaiah Arumainayagam has finally received a significant national honor – a Lifetime Award. The recognition, a moment of immense pride for the 84-year-old and his family, comes after years of tireless applications for national accolades.

Arumainayagam, a name synonymous with excellence in Indian football, enthralled fans in both Bengaluru and Kolkata during his illustrious career. He proudly donned the colors of prestigious clubs such as Mohun Bagan and Southern Railway, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.

His national team career was equally distinguished. Arumainayagam was a crucial part of the Indian squad that finished as runners-up in the 1964 Asia Cup and secured a bronze medal at the Merdeka Cup in 1966. Most notably, he is one of the few surviving members of the iconic Indian team that clinched the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games – a historic achievement for the nation.

In a poignant interview with The Times of India in 2020, Arumainayagam reflected on his career, expressing his good fortune at having played alongside footballing titans like Chuni Goswami, PK Banerjee, and Tulsidas Balram. His humility and deep respect for his contemporaries shone through even then.

Upon hearing the news of his impending Lifetime Award, the octogenarian’s initial reaction was a mix of surprise and joy. "Is that so? I got the Arjuna award!" he exclaimed, his memory sometimes troubled by age. After some gentle prompting, he reiterated his happiness, stating, "I’m happy to win the honor."

The journey to this well-deserved recognition has been a persistent one for the Arumainayagam family. His son, Dennis, revealed that they had been applying for national honors for the past three years, a testament to their unwavering belief in his father’s contributions to Indian football. This award not only acknowledges Arumainayagam’s outstanding career but also serves as an inspiration to future generations of Indian footballers. The nation celebrates a true legend, whose artistry and dedication have finally been fittingly honored.
