Rajshri Deshpande: Breast Cancer Diagnosis a "Wake-Up Call" to Prioritize Self-Love and Passions
Mumbai, India – Acclaimed actor and social activist Rajshri Deshpande has candidly opened up about her recent Grade 1 breast cancer diagnosis, describing it as a profound "wake-up call" that prompted a significant reassessment of her life’s priorities. The diagnosis, received in March, has propelled the versatile artist to embrace self-love and address the considerable mental strain accumulated from meticulously balancing her acting career with her dedicated efforts in rural development.
In a heartfelt interview, Deshpande revealed that the challenging experience served as a crucial reminder to reconnect with her own well-being. "I loved myself all these years. I was always a fearless person. But somewhere you forget [self-love]," she reflected to Mid Day. "For me, it was a wake-up call that I was stressing myself mentally."
Beyond her captivating performances on screen, Deshpande is deeply committed to social change through her non-profit organization, the Narbhanga Foundation, which focuses on rural development. She admitted that the inherent pressures of this impactful social work had, over time, taken a considerable toll on her mental health. "Sometimes you are dealing with an issue and thinking about it. Carrying it [within] hurts you," she explained, highlighting the emotional burden she often carried.
Now, as she navigates her path to recovery, Deshpande has placed self-care and the pursuit of her passions at the forefront. This renewed focus is evident in her recent decision to enroll in a course at London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. This step signifies not just a commitment to refining her craft but also a profound investment in her personal growth and fulfillment.
"I’m glad that God and my parents’ love gave me another chance to live. I want to do more," Deshpande expressed with gratitude. "If you don’t dream or hope, dance and sing or scream, what else is important?" Her words resonate with a newfound appreciation for life’s simple yet profound joys.
On the professional front, 2025 proved to be an incredibly busy year for Deshpande, showcasing her diverse talent across various formats. Audiences saw her commanding presence as Pratibha Sen in the Netflix series ‘Black Warrant’ and as Naina Johri in the Amazon Prime Video series ‘Rangeen’. Most recently, she captivated viewers in ‘Baapya’, a Marathi comedy-drama helmed by Sameer Tewari. Set against the picturesque backdrop of coastal Konkan, the film delves into themes of identity, acceptance, and societal norms following the unexpected return of Shailaja, who had previously left the village as Shailesh before undergoing gender reassignment surgery. Deshpande delivered a powerful performance, portraying both Shailaja and Shailesh, further cementing her reputation as an actor capable of tackling complex and thought-provoking roles.
