Manchester United Eye Brighton Midfielder Carlos Baleba in Late Transfer Push

MANCHESTER, UK – October 24, 2024 – Manchester United have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Cameroonian midfielder, Carlos Baleba, as the transfer deadline looms. The move, while seemingly sensible given United’s long-standing interest, comes with a degree of risk, according to BBC Sport Manchester United reporter Simon Stone.

United’s previous attempt to sign Baleba approximately 12 months ago underscores their belief in his capabilities. The 20-year-old is seen as the dynamic box-to-box midfielder the Red Devils currently lack, despite recent additions like Santos and Tielemans to their ranks. Sources close to the player suggest Baleba is eager to make the switch to Old Trafford. Crucially, the transfer fee is anticipated to be significantly lower than the prohibitive £100 million quoted during their initial interest.

However, the reduced price tag is directly linked to Baleba’s somewhat underwhelming performances for Brighton last season. After a promising 2024-25 campaign, which saw him make 31 starts and three substitute appearances in the Premier League, his role diminished in the 2025-26 season. During this period, he managed 23 starts and eight substitute appearances, a dip in form that reportedly impacted his value to Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, even as the Seagulls secured European football for only the second time in their history.

There was speculation that Baleba’s focus might have been affected by Manchester United’s persistent interest, leading to his inconsistent play. However, Brighton sources have reportedly denied this, suggesting his dip in form was unrelated to transfer distractions.

As the transfer window rapidly approaches its closure, Manchester United’s hierarchy has evidently made a definitive move for the young midfielder. The critical question now for manager Michael Carrick and the club is whether they can rekindle the form that saw Baleba emerge as a standout talent in the 2024-25 season. Securing the "2024-25 version" of Baleba will be paramount for United if this late-window gamble is to pay off and address their midfield needs.
