Hockey World Cup: India extend dominance over Pakistan with 5-3 thriller, seal next-round spot | Hockey News

New Delhi, India – In a pulsating encounter befitting one of hockey’s most storied rivalries, India secured a thrilling 5-3 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan in their final Pool D match of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup. The hard-fought win not only extended India’s dominance but also booked their spot in the next round of the tournament, leaving Pakistan’s World Cup campaign at an end.

The high-octane clash, held on Wednesday, saw India initially surge to a commanding 3-0 lead before Pakistan mounted a spirited fightback. Star performers for India included Harmanpreet Singh and Abhishek, both netting two goals each, while Hardik Singh successfully converted a penalty stroke to maintain India’s control over the proceedings.

Pakistan, however, refused to yield, with Hannan Shahid scoring a brace and Sufyan Khan adding a goal from a penalty corner. Despite these efforts, India held their nerve, particularly during a tense final quarter where they played a spell with 10 players, to secure the crucial win.

This result sees India finish second in Pool D with six points from three matches, trailing only England, who topped the group with a perfect nine points.

Harmanpreet, Abhishek Ignite India’s Attack

India initiated the match with an aggressive tempo, earning their first penalty corner in the fifth minute. Harmanpreet Singh’s initial drag-flick was blocked, but the India captain capitalized on the second opportunity, firing a low, hard shot past the goalkeeper and the post defender to give India an early lead.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 11th minute through Abhishek. Displaying exquisite control, Abhishek brought down an aerial ball and played it across the goal, with the ball ultimately deflecting off a Pakistan stick and into the net. Although initially credited to Mandeep Singh, the FIH later confirmed Abhishek as the scorer. India maintained relentless pressure, largely dictating play in Pakistan’s half, and concluded the first quarter with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Harmanpreet further extended India’s lead in the 21st minute from another penalty corner. Following a variation, Rajinder Singh’s initial drag-flick was saved, but Harmanpreet was quick to react, smashing the rebound home. This goal marked Harmanpreet’s fifth of the 2026 World Cup, highlighting his crucial role in the Indian offense.

Pakistan’s Resilient Response in a Goal-Filled Second Quarter

Undeterred by the deficit, Pakistan mounted a remarkable comeback. Hannan Shahid pulled one back in the 22nd minute, reacting fastest to a rebound after an initial save by the Indian goalkeeper.

However, India swiftly restored their three-goal cushion. Abhishek, with a superb individual run into the circle, showcased excellent dribbling skills before his shot took a deflection off a Pakistani stick and found the net.

Pakistan continued to press, with Sufyan Khan converting a penalty corner in the 25th minute, his drag-flick deflecting off Amit Rohidas. This second quarter proved to be a goal-fest, injecting a frantic energy into the contest. Despite Pakistan’s resurgence, India entered halftime with a 4-2 lead, keenly aware of their opponents’ attacking capabilities.

Hardik Restores Comfort, India Defends Firmly

The second half saw India regain some breathing room early on. Awarded a penalty stroke for an intentional foul inside the circle, Hardik Singh confidently stepped up and converted, re-establishing India’s three-goal advantage.

Pakistan persisted in their offensive efforts, but India’s defense held firm, effectively neutralizing several dangerous moments. The visitors even earned a penalty corner on a counter-attack, but India’s rushing defenders applied enough pressure to force the drag-flick wide. India maintained control heading into the final quarter, though Abhishek came close to adding another, with his effort hitting the side netting.

Tense Final Quarter Sees India Hold On

The final quarter began with an immediate impact from Pakistan. Hannan Shahid scored his second goal in the 46th minute, capitalizing on a turnover in midfield after Hardik lost possession. His composed finish narrowed India’s lead to 5-3, setting up a nail-biting finish.

As Pakistan intensified their high press in search of another opening, India was increasingly forced into a defensive stance. The pressure mounted further when Aditya Arjun received a yellow card, leaving India with 10 players for the final five minutes. Pakistan won a penalty corner referral after the ball was deemed to have hit an Indian defender’s shin guard, and continued to throw players forward. However, the Indian defense remained resolute, refusing to concede their two-goal advantage.

The final whistle confirmed India’s victory, extending their impressive record against Pakistan and securing their progression in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, while simultaneously bringing an end to Pakistan’s tournament journey.
