A recent hands-on review of the $1,100 Pixel 11 Pro reveals both the dazzling potential and the frustrating limitations of this nascent technology.

AI-Controlled Apps: A Glimpse into the Future, or a Buggy Present?

At the core of the Pixel 11’s AI capabilities lies Gemini Intelligence, a software suite designed to grant AI direct control over various applications. The concept is compelling: imagine casually texting a friend about dinner plans, then simply asking Gemini to book a table at your favorite restaurant. The AI would then interact with OpenTable, the popular reservation app, to secure your spot.

However, real-world testing exposed significant hurdles. In one instance, an attempt to book a table at San Francisco’s Zuni Café for lunch via Gemini proved frustrating. After initially displaying available slots, those options mysteriously vanished upon a subsequent check, despite OpenTable itself showing ample availability. Another endeavor to place a lengthy Instacart order from Costco was abruptly cut short when the phone, designed to restart after a 60-second press of the power button (which also summons Gemini), powered off mid-order. This dual functionality of the button, combined with the AI’s momentary listening lapses after release, created a cumbersome experience.

"Gemini was so clunky with controlling my apps that I would have saved more time booking restaurant reservations and ordering groceries manually," the reviewer stated, expressing skepticism about mainstream consumer embrace of AI-controlled apps in the near future. Google, acknowledging the OpenTable glitch, stated it is working on a fix, and clarified that users could release the button after summoning Gemini for longer requests.

"Magic" Camera: Convenience vs. Creativity

Beyond app control, the Pixel 11 introduces "Magic Capture," a new camera mode that promises to automate the photo-taking and curation process. By tapping the Gemini logo in the camera app, users activate a feature that records a video and then intelligently selects the "best" still frame. For instance, when photographing energetic toddlers, the software aims to filter out blinks and frowns, presenting only the most cheerful smiles.

The results, however, were a mixed bag. While Magic Capture successfully captured an appealing shot of a corgi, it faltered with a two-year-old, selecting a neutral expression despite the presence of a perfectly charming, eyes-closed smile within the recorded video. While Google states users can override the AI’s selection, the reviewer found this counterproductive, arguing that the traditional method of burst shooting and manual selection offered a more satisfying, creative experience. "Letting an A.I. bot take over your photography feels joyless," the review concludes, suggesting that the ritual of personal photo curation remains deeply ingrained.

Live Translation: A Glimmer of Global Potential

Perhaps the most impressive and "wow-inducing" feature of the Pixel 11 is its automatic dubbing for videos and podcasts. This innovative tool allows users to watch YouTube videos or listen to podcasts with real-time audio translation into their preferred language, even attempting to mimic the original speaker’s voice.

Initially launching with a limited number of languages, the feature was tested with French on English-produced New York Times cooking videos. The result was near-instantaneous, allowing the reviewer to hear familiar voices like Tom Holland and Matt Damon discussing pizza en français. While the translation appeared "vaguely accurate" to the reviewer, a native French-speaking colleague, Léo Hamelin, noted the translations were often "overly literal and occasionally jarring." Nonetheless, the potential of this technology is immense. If perfected, live dubbing could significantly enhance global communication and content consumption, echoing the success of last year’s live translation in Apple’s AirPods.

The Bottom Line: Evolution, Not Revolution (Yet)

The initial assessment of the Pixel 11 suggests that while AI-powered phones are undeniably the future, the present reality is one of ongoing development and user adaptation. The reviewer concludes that people are more likely to treat AI as another utility, a specialized app for specific tasks, rather than a fundamental paradigm shift in how they interact with their smartphones.

Historically, Google has introduced several impactful AI-powered phone features that have found mainstream acceptance, such as the ability to erase photo bombers, screen scam calls, and transcribe recorded conversations. These innovations, while enhancing the phone experience, haven’t fundamentally altered core usage patterns. Live dubbing, once refined and expanded to more languages, is poised to join this list.
