Trump Escalates Economic Pressure on Iran, Threatens "Tremendous Punishment" for Allies
New Delhi – US President Donald Trump has declared a "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country" targeting Iran, threatening "tremendous" punishment for any nation or entity that provides assistance or engages in business with the Islamic Republic. This aggressive escalation comes as the war in the Middle East approaches its sixth month.
In a series of statements posted on Truth Social, President Trump outlined a comprehensive economic warfare strategy, asserting that Iran has failed to capitalize on opportunities for a deal offered by his administration. "No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump declared.
The President explicitly warned that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to offer a "lifeline" to Iran will face severe repercussions. He specifically identified activities such as oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies as needing to cease "NOW." While he refrained from naming specific countries, Trump stated, "they know who they are," indicating a broad reach for these new sanctions. Prior to the conflict, Iran’s largest trading partners included economic powerhouses such as China, India, Turkey, Germany, South Korea, and Japan.
"This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat," Trump further emphasized. He expressed confidence that these "historic measures" would cripple Iran’s ability to project terror worldwide, reiterating his firm stance: "IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON."
This announcement signifies a significant intensification of the existing "Operation Economic Fury," a months-long campaign by the US Treasury aimed at disrupting Tehran’s financial networks through targeted sanctions.
Middle East Conflict Enters Sixth Month
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East originated on February 28, when joint strikes by US and Israeli forces targeted Iran, resulting in the deaths of key Iranian leaders, including the then 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with attacks on American and Israeli assets throughout the region, further destabilizing an already volatile situation.
Trump Dismisses Talks, Contradicts Son-in-Law
Adding to the escalating rhetoric, President Trump affirmed on Tuesday that no talks were being held or scheduled with Iran following the expiration of a temporary 60-day ceasefire agreement. "There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Trump posted on Truth Social. He also confirmed the continued enforcement of the naval blockade and asserted that the critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil passageway, remains open and operating, with all water mines removed or detonated.
These remarks directly contradicted earlier statements made by his son-in-law and special envoy, Jared Kushner, who had indicated that talks with Iran were ongoing and "probably more robust" than ever. A memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 had established a 60-day timeframe for a broader agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear program and US sanctions. However, this agreement, which had declared the "immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts," quickly unraveled over a dispute regarding control of the Strait of Hormuz.
As the conflict persists and economic pressure mounts, the international community watches closely to see the full implications of President Trump’s "most crushing economic operation" against Iran and its potential impact on global trade and stability.
