India news: US envoy's Kashmir remarks reignite Pakistan row

US Ambassador’s Kashmir Remark Ignites India-Pakistan Diplomatic Row

New Delhi, India – August 20, 2026 – A diplomatic firestorm has erupted between India and Pakistan following remarks made by US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, who described Jammu and Kashmir as an "important part of India." The statement, made during Gor’s inaugural visit to the disputed territory, has triggered strong condemnations from Islamabad and swift retaliatory actions from both nations.

On Wednesday, Ambassador Gor’s assertion that Washington would reconsider its travel advisory for Kashmir, currently designated Level 4 "Do not travel" due to terrorism and civil unrest, sent shockwaves through the region. This declaration, perceived by Pakistan as a blatant endorsement of India’s claim over the entirety of Kashmir, immediately drew the ire of Islamabad.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry wasted no time in summoning Washington’s top envoy in Islamabad, where they "strongly condemned and categorically rejected" Gor’s remarks. A statement released by the ministry underscored that "Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory," reiterating Pakistan’s long-held stance on the region’s unresolved status.

The diplomatic spat quickly escalated beyond verbal protests, manifesting in symbolic yet significant actions. In a direct response to Gor’s statement, Pakistani authorities removed security bollards and parking poles positioned outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Not to be outdone, Indian authorities reciprocated early on Thursday by dismantling safety barricades and traffic bollards surrounding the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, including queue barriers near the visa section. These tit-for-tat removals of security infrastructure underscore the simmering tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours over the contested region.

The historical backdrop to this latest dispute is a complex and deeply entrenched one. Both India and Pakistan lay full claim to Kashmir, but control it only in part, a situation that has fostered decades of conflict and distrust. Ambassador Gor, seen as a close ally of US President Donald Trump, made his remarks in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. His statement, captured in an image widely circulated by @USAmbIndia X/ANI, depicting him meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is viewed as a significant shift in US diplomatic posture on the issue.

Border Tensions and Domestic Affairs

Meanwhile, elsewhere in India, the government is grappling with other pressing issues. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday dismissed claims of a recent Chinese incursion into the eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, calling such reports "incorrect" and potentially damaging to the morale of Indian security forces. Rijiju emphasized the Modi government’s "top priority" to develop infrastructure in border areas, a policy he claims was neglected by previous administrations. The India-China border remains undemarcated in several areas, contributing to periodic tensions.

Domestically, the reverberations of the "Cockroach protests" continue to be felt in New Delhi. The government is reportedly urging cabinet ministers to enhance their social media engagement and connect with Gen Z, indicating a focus on public perception and youth outreach.

The recent events highlight a dynamic and often volatile political landscape in India, marked by international diplomatic challenges, ongoing border disputes, and evolving domestic political strategies. For all the latest updates, follow our live blog.
