IIT Kanpur Spearheads Nationwide Cybersecurity Education Drive, Targeting 300,000 Students in Rural and Semi-Urban India

KANPUR, INDIA – August 20, 2026 – In a landmark initiative poised to democratize cybersecurity education across India, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur’s cutting-edge cybersecurity innovation hub, C3iHub, has forged a strategic partnership with Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University (DBRAU), Agra, and the Vivekanand Incubation Foundation (VIF). This collaborative effort will launch a vocational program in cybersecurity designed to reach an unprecedented three lakh (300,000) students across DBRAU’s extensive network of over 570 affiliated colleges.

This groundbreaking program, formalized through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is particularly noteworthy for its commitment to accessibility. Delivered entirely online and in Hindi, it directly addresses the linguistic barriers that often hinder students from semi-urban and rural areas in accessing technical courses traditionally taught in English. This strategic choice underscores a vision to equip a broad demographic with essential digital literacy and defense skills.

Comprehensive Curriculum Addresses Modern Digital Threats

The curriculum, meticulously designed and delivered by C3iHub – leveraging IIT Kanpur’s renowned expertise in cybersecurity research and training – promises a comprehensive exploration of critical digital safety topics. Students will gain invaluable knowledge in areas such as:

  • Cybercrime and Cyber Hygiene: Understanding the landscape of online criminal activities and adopting best practices for secure digital interactions.
  • Social Media Threats: Navigating the complexities of social media, identifying risks, and protecting personal information.
  • Identity Theft and Personal Data Leaks: Recognizing the dangers of identity compromise and safeguarding sensitive data.
  • Online Safety for Women and Children: Specialized modules focusing on the unique online vulnerabilities faced by these demographics.
  • The Dark Web, Cyber Terrorism, and Illegal Online Activities: Gaining insights into the darker corners of the internet and the threats they pose.

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the program emphasizes practical application through quizzes, interactive workshops, and personalized virtual labs. These immersive experiences will provide students with hands-on exposure to cybersecurity concepts and real-world scenarios, bridging the gap between classroom learning and practical application.

DBRAU Establishes Dedicated Cybersecurity Counselling Cell

Further enhancing the program’s impact, DBRAU will establish a dedicated Cybersecurity Counselling Cell (CCC). This vital resource will serve as a first line of defense against cybercrime, offering support, guidance, and prevention strategies to students who may become victims of online threats.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Prof. Surendra Baswana, Programme Director, C3iHub, and Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kanpur; Prof. Sanjay Chaudhary, Director, IQAC and VIF, DBRAU; and Prof. Anil Gupta, Director, UCC, DBRAU Agra. Also present were IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, and virtually, DBRAU Vice Chancellor Prof. Ashu Rani, alongside Prof. Vinay Kumar Pathak, Vice Chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University Kanpur (CSJMU) and President of the Association of Indian Universities.

DBRAU Vice Chancellor Prof. Ashu Rani eloquently articulated the university’s commitment, stating that its extensive reach across 570-plus colleges carries a profound responsibility to prepare students for the increasingly digital world. She emphasized that cybersecurity is no longer an niche subject reserved for engineering students but a fundamental life skill essential for every individual navigating the complexities of modern society, both personally and professionally.

This collaborative initiative marks a significant stride in bolstering India’s digital resilience by empowering its youth with the knowledge and tools to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. The program is expected to have a transformative impact on digital literacy and security awareness across the nation.
