Apple Card Turns Seven With Big Change Ahead

Apple Card Marks Seven-Year Milestone Amid Major Transition to Chase

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the Apple Card’s widespread launch in the United States. Since its debut in 2019, the product has redefined the digital credit experience by integrating directly into the iPhone’s Wallet app, offering a suite of consumer-friendly features that include no annual, late, or foreign transaction fees, color-coded spending analytics, and the popular Daily Cash rewards program.

Beyond the standard credit card features, the Apple ecosystem has expanded the service significantly, most notably with the introduction of a high-yield savings account for users. However, as the product celebrates its latest Apple Card turns seven with big change ahead, the company is preparing for its most significant structural shift to date.

A New Chapter with J.P. Morgan

Earlier this year, Apple confirmed a major shift in its financial partnerships: J.P. Morgan Chase is set to take over as the official issuer of the Apple Card by early 2028.

This transition follows the decision by Goldman Sachs to exit the consumer lending space. After grappling with substantial financial losses and various regulatory and operational hurdles, Goldman Sachs and Apple reached a mutual agreement to terminate their partnership early—shortening what was originally intended to be a contract running through 2030.

What This Means for Users

For the millions of current Apple Card holders, the immediate outlook is one of stability. Apple has emphasized that the user experience will remain unchanged for the time being:

  • Continuous Use: Cardholders can continue to use their Apple Card as they normally would, and Goldman Sachs will continue to manage customer service inquiries throughout the interim period.
  • The Transition: Once the migration to Chase is finalized, account balances will be transferred to the new issuer. Apple has noted that this change will be reflected on individual credit reports as the accounts transition to the new financial institution.
  • Network Stability: The Apple Card will continue to operate on the Mastercard payment network, ensuring that the underlying infrastructure for transactions remains consistent.

Apple has promised to provide further details as the transition date approaches, keeping users informed of any potential modifications to account terms or platform features.

Global Availability Remains Limited

While the Apple Card has solidified its place as a staple of the Apple financial suite, it remains a U.S.-exclusive product. Despite years of speculation regarding potential international expansion, there is currently no indication that Apple plans to launch the credit card in other markets in the near future.

For now, as the card enters its eighth year, the focus remains on ensuring a seamless handoff between banking partners, maintaining the seamless, app-based interface that has defined the product since its 2019 inception.
