Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026: India vs England ends in 0-0 draw

Indian Women’s Hockey Team Keeps Semi-Final Hopes Alive After Gritty Draw Against England

The Indian women’s hockey team produced a resilient defensive masterclass on Thursday, holding their nerve under intense pressure to secure a goalless draw against England in their final Pool D match of the Women’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen.

With this crucial point, world No. 9 India finished second in the pool with five points, successfully advancing to the next round of the tournament and keeping their semi-final aspirations firmly on track.

A High-Stakes Battle

The mathematical stakes were clear heading into the contest: India, sitting on four points, required at least a draw to secure a top-two finish, while seventh-ranked England needed an outright victory to overtake the Indians in the standings.

Earlier in the day, the People’s Republic of China solidified their position at the top of Pool D with seven points after a commanding 5-1 victory over South Africa. As a result, China and India progress to the next stage, where they will join reigning champions the Netherlands and Australia in a challenging new group. England and South Africa will now be relegated to the competition’s classification rounds.

Defensive Heroics Secure the Draw

While the match ended in a stalemate, the encounter was a thriller characterized by tactical intensity and dramatic defensive stands. After a cagey start, the second half saw England surge forward in an attempt to force a result, placing the Indian defense under immense duress.

Over the course of the 60 minutes, the Indian side was forced to weather 28 English circle entries and defend 12 penalty corners. The goalkeeping duo of Bichu Devi and Savita Punia were the architects of the result, pulling off a series of spectacular saves.

India’s defense faced its most harrowing moments in the final quarter, which was played almost entirely in their own half. Even with England pulling their goalkeeper for an outfield player with five minutes remaining to force a breakthrough, India refused to yield. A critical, diving save to the left by Bichu Devi in the final minute ultimately cemented the clean sheet and confirmed India’s progression.

Looking Ahead

The opening quarters had seen India dictate play with more assertive attacking transitions, creating several penalty corner opportunities through the likes of Navneet Kaur, Deepika, and Salima Tete. However, as the match progressed, the focus shifted entirely to India’s structural discipline.

India now faces an uphill battle in the next phase of the competition. They are set to face the world No. 1 and tournament hosts, the Netherlands, on Friday, followed by a daunting clash against Australia. Having carried over one point from their pool-stage draw, the Indian squad will need to maintain their disciplined form if they are to make a deep run in the tournament.
