Barking and Dagenham Students Celebrate Record-Breaking GCSE Success

Scenes of jubilation erupted across East London today as local pupils shattered academic records, delivering the borough’s strongest set of GCSE results in recent history.

For the second consecutive year, Barking and Dagenham has seen a significant rise in the number of students securing top-tier qualifications. Performance in English and Maths has been particularly notable, with the percentage of students achieving a "strong pass" (grades 9-5) sitting nearly four per cent above the national average.

The results highlight a broad trend of academic excellence, with the proportion of top-tier 9-7 grades—the modern equivalent of the traditional A*-A—rising to 15 per cent. Furthermore, overall attainment as measured by the Attainment 8 score, which tracks performance across eight core subjects, has seen a steady increase. Excluding the unique circumstances of the pandemic years, these figures represent the best-ever results for the borough on key performance indicators.

A Borough-Wide Achievement

The success story was reflected in schools across the borough, each reporting standout performances:

  • Robert Clack School, home to the largest Year 11 cohort in the country, managed a remarkable feat by recording their best-ever results despite their significant expansion. With 525 students sitting exams, the school outperformed the national average for "strong passes" in English and Maths by 10 per cent.
  • Riverside School celebrated its best-ever GCSE performance, with over 40 per cent of all grades falling into the elite 9-7 bracket. Students Ayman and Mahin were singled out for achieving a "clean sweep" of grade 9s.
  • Barking Abbey recorded its highest-ever percentage of 9-5 grades in English and Maths, with student Chabane achieving a full set of grade 9s.
  • Jo Richardson Community School saw two out of three pupils achieve a standard pass (9-4) in English and Maths, while The Warren School reported nearly four in five pupils achieving a grade 4 or higher in English.

Community Pride and Resilience

Local leaders were quick to praise the cohort, teachers, and families for their collective efforts. Cllr Jane Jones, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care, Education & Schools, lauded the students for their hard work.

"Our young people have once again done the borough proud," Cllr Jones said. "I don’t doubt for a minute the huge amount of work and revision each and every pupil has put in to make today’s record-breaking results possible. It goes to show that when it comes to a great education, it starts here in Barking and Dagenham."

Looking Toward the Future

For many students, today was not just a celebration of past hard work, but a springboard for the future. Many of the borough’s schools, including Barking Abbey and The Warren School, reported a surge in applications for their Sixth Form programmes.

Executive Headteachers across the district highlighted that these results were achieved through "resilience," "faith," and "immense determination." As students across the borough prepare for the next step—whether it be A-levels, apprenticeships, or vocational training—the sentiment remains clear: the class of 2026 has set a new, high-water mark for educational achievement in East London.
