Rajkumar Santoshi Weighs In on Box Office Clash Between ‘Batwara 1947’ and ‘Awarapan 2’

The Independence Day weekend box office became the stage for a high-profile showdown between two major releases: the Sunny Deol-led historical drama Batwara 1947 and the romantic sequel Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi. As reports indicate that the latter pulled ahead in collections, director Rajkumar Santoshi has broken his silence regarding the competitive performance of his latest project.

A Gracious Response to Competition

In a recent interview with Moneycontrol, the veteran filmmaker was asked whether the direct competition with Awarapan 2 had negatively impacted the commercial trajectory of Batwara 1947. Rather than attributing his film’s box office struggles to the rival release, Santoshi chose to take the high road, extending his congratulations to the team behind the romantic drama.

"I would congratulate them," Santoshi stated. "‘Awarapan 2’ has been liked and appreciated by the people, and it is doing excellent business. I want to congratulate Emraan Hashmi, Mukesh Bhatt, Vishesh Bhatt, and the entire team."

Box Office Performance and Film Details

Batwara 1947 faced a challenging opening week. According to data from the trade website Sacnilk, the film managed to accumulate approximately Rs 32.41 crore net in India by its seventh day. Observers noted a significant dip in momentum following the initial Independence Day weekend surge.

Directed by Santoshi, the film boasts a notable ensemble cast, including Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, and Isha Sandhir. The project marks another collaboration between Deol and Santoshi, who are famously known for their string of cult hits like Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak.

Meanwhile, its competitor, Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar, has enjoyed a warm reception from audiences. Serving as a successor to the 2007 cult classic Awarapan, the film features Emraan Hashmi reprising his intensity alongside Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi, and Suvinder Vicky, with special appearances by Shriya Saran and Shaad Randhawa.

Both films hit theaters on August 14, 2026, marking a significant moment in the year’s theatrical calendar. While the box office race continues to evolve, Santoshi’s professional demeanor underscores the spirit of healthy competition in the Hindi film industry.
