Merseyside Students Celebrate Historic GCSE Success Amid Record-Breaking Year
Students across Merseyside braved torrential downpours today to collect their GCSE results, marking a day of triumph for schools across the region. Amid the celebrations, St Anselm’s College in Birkenhead stood out, as the school announced its third consecutive year of record-breaking GCSE results.
The Class of 2026 has officially secured the highest Attainment 8 score in the history of the college, with an impressive 41% of all grades awarded at the top tier of 7–9.
St Anselm’s College: Academic Excellence and Beyond
The atmosphere at St Anselm’s was one of pride as students opened their envelopes. The star of the day was Vasile Mateescu, who achieved a perfect set of straight Grade 9s—a rare and remarkable academic feat. He was joined by a cohort of high achievers, including John Chan, Malachy Cubbin, Luke Fisher, and Chimemelie Okeke, all of whom secured almost straight 9s, with just a single 8 apiece. David Ebewele also celebrated a stellar performance, earning five 9s and four 8s.
Reflecting on the success, Headteacher Mrs. Cubbin praised the pupils not just for their intellect, but for their character.
"I am delighted to celebrate with our fabulous Year 11 students," said Mrs. Cubbin. "I am most delighted because our students haven’t just excelled academically; they’ve turned out as well-rounded young adults. They have balanced their studies with incredible success in the sporting arena, becoming national champions in athletics and cross-country, and lifting the Cheshire Cup in rugby."
She added, "Our students have worked tirelessly, showing amazing resilience, determination, and grit. They have given 100% every single day, and I could not be prouder."
A Region-Wide Success
The spirit of achievement was echoed at schools throughout the Wirral. The Birkenhead Park School also reported a successful day, with leadership highlighting the personal growth of their students.
"Results day is always incredibly special because behind every grade is a young person who has worked hard, overcome challenges, and taken another step towards their future," said Mrs. Dawes, Headteacher of The Birkenhead Park School. She noted that the school’s ongoing transformation continues to be driven by "excellent teaching, high expectations, and staff who genuinely believe in their students."
Meanwhile, at Birkenhead School, leadership reported that over half of all grades were awarded at the highest levels of 7–9. Tom Whitworth, Head of Seniors at the school, stated that the results are a "testament to the students’ commitment and resilience," as well as the unwavering support provided by the school’s faculty.
As the dust settles on this year’s examination period, it is clear that Merseyside’s secondary education sector is thriving, with a new cohort of ambitious young people now looking ahead to their next steps in education and beyond.
