Rail Travel Disrupted Across London as Fire and Infrastructure Issues Cause Major Delays
Commuters and holidaymakers face significant travel disruption across London’s rail network today following a series of incidents, including a train fire and ongoing recovery efforts from last week’s derailment.
Passengers attempting to reach Gatwick Airport were among those affected after smoke was spotted billowing from a train at Clapham Junction. Southern Rail confirmed that the incident involved an empty Southeastern train that was being moved to a depot when the alarm was raised.
Engineers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they identified the cause of the smoke as a brake fault. A spokesperson for the operator confirmed that the issue has since been resolved, the train has been moved to a safe location, and all affected lines between Balham and London Victoria have reopened. There were no injuries reported during the incident, though the disruption caused significant delays to Southern and Gatwick Express services.
The fire is the latest in a series of challenges currently plaguing the capital’s transport infrastructure. Elsewhere, the Windrush Line is grappling with severe delays between Highbury & Islington and Crystal Palace. Transport authorities attribute this to an "unsafe structure" located in close proximity to the tracks, which has necessitated a suspension of services between Surrey Quays and New Cross.
Meanwhile, Network Rail continues to manage the fallout from the serious rail incident that occurred last Thursday, when a train traveling from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed. Approximately 150 passengers were onboard when three carriages left the tracks, an event described by survivors as "terrifying." Two people sustained injuries during the crash.
Recovery crews have been seen removing the mangled carriages from the site near Lewes, but the complexity of the operation means the line between Lewes and Haywards Heath is expected to remain closed for at least another ten days.
As investigations into the cause of the derailment continue, commuters are being advised to check the latest travel updates before setting out on their journeys, as the combination of emergency repairs and ongoing maintenance continues to impact routes across the South East.
