Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘Khalifa’ Opens Strong at the Box Office with Rs 5.68 Crore

Prithviraj Sukumaran is back on the big screen with a bang. His latest film, the much-anticipated action drama Khalifa, has officially arrived in theaters, marking a promising start to its commercial run. Directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Vysakh, the movie has successfully drawn audiences to cinemas, clocking in a solid opening day performance.

A Decent Start for the Action Thriller

According to initial data from industry tracker Sacnilk, the Malayalam-language film earned an estimated Rs 4.90 crore in net collections across India on its opening day. When factoring in taxes, the total India gross collection stands at an impressive Rs 5.68 crore.

The film saw a consistent turnout throughout the day, supported by 1,967 screenings. The occupancy rates remained steady, peaking during the night shows at 55.83%. Evening screenings followed with a 42.42% occupancy, while morning and afternoon slots recorded 40.97% and 32.92%, respectively, reflecting a healthy overall engagement of 46%.

Regional Breakdown

As expected, Kerala remained the primary stronghold for the film, contributing a significant Rs 4.85 crore to the national gross. While Kerala led the charge, the film also garnered attention in neighboring markets. Karnataka emerged as the second-highest contributor, bringing in Rs 44 lakh, followed by Tamil Nadu with Rs 20 lakh. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together added Rs 4 lakh, with other regions contributing an additional Rs 15 lakh to the total.

Reuniting for a Spectacle

‘Khalifa’ serves as a high-profile reunion between Prithviraj Sukumaran and director Vysakh, whose previous collaboration, Pokkiri Raja, remains a fan favorite.

The film has received a mixed but generally favorable reception from critics. In its three-star review, ETimes noted that while the film occasionally struggles under the weight of its complex political subplots and family histories, it succeeds as a "stylish, star-driven spectacle." The review further observed that while the narrative keeps women largely on the periphery, Prithviraj’s commanding screen presence keeps the audience engaged, positioning the film as a definitive entertainer for his massive fan base.

As the weekend approaches, industry analysts will be watching closely to see if the film can sustain its momentum and build on these opening numbers.
