Volkswagen Shifts Strategy: To Launch Made-in-India Sub-4m SUV by 2027
MUMBAI – In a significant move to deepen its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets, Volkswagen has announced plans to launch a locally manufactured sub-four-meter compact SUV in India by 2027. The strategic pivot aligns with the company’s broader "vocal for local" initiative, as the German automaker navigates an increasingly regionalized global automotive landscape.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, confirmed that the upcoming model will be built on the company’s highly localized MQB-A0-IN platform, which is already operational at its manufacturing facility in Pune. Designed specifically for Indian roads and consumer preferences, the vehicle is expected to become the brand’s most accessible offering in the country, aiming to capture a larger share of India’s booming compact SUV segment.
A Global Shift Toward Regionalization
Schäfer emphasized that the automotive industry is undergoing a structural transformation. "The automotive industry has become more vocal for local or a more regional reorganized industry, which in the past it had not been," Schäfer noted. "Now we see cars made in China for China, we see a lot of that happening here in India. We see a lot of dynamics in the US."
This shift, he explained, allows Volkswagen to treat India not just as a sales market, but as a strategic hub for research, development, and information technology.
Exploring Local Partnerships
Addressing speculation regarding future collaborations, Schäfer acknowledged that Volkswagen is actively evaluating potential alliances. "We are exploring all options with what we can do in India because it has such importance for us," he said. "Talking to a few local partners is a good way forward. While it’s too early to announce anything, it’s not years away."
India as an Export Powerhouse
Beyond domestic sales, Volkswagen continues to leverage India as a vital export base. Currently, the company ships vehicles manufactured in India to over 40 countries, including Mexico. As international trade agreements evolve, the automaker sees further opportunities to strengthen the synergy between its Indian operations and global markets, including Europe.
"India is a market of enormous scale and ambition, and this new compact SUV marks an important step in Volkswagen’s journey here," Schäfer added. "We are bringing our global expertise in building cars that people love to drive and own into a segment of great importance to Indian customers. This model reinforces our long-term commitment to the Indian market as part of our global growth strategy."
As Volkswagen embraces this vocal for local philosophy, the 2027 launch is poised to be a cornerstone of its effort to transform its brand presence in India, balancing German engineering precision with the specific demands of the local consumer.
