Stock Market Today Live Updates: Sensex, Nifty eye higher opening after breaking seven-day losing streak

Indian Markets Poised for Cautious Opening Following Brief Relief Rally

Indian equities are expected to open on a cautious note this Friday, as investors weigh the impact of rising global energy prices against the optimism generated by a much-needed recovery in the previous session.

GIFT Nifty futures, a key indicator for the domestic market’s opening, were trading at 24,311.50 as of 7:52 am, suggesting a mildly positive start. This follows Thursday’s session, where the Nifty 50 snapped a seven-day losing streak, closing at 24,231.85, while the Sensex ended a four-day decline, gaining 628.04 points to settle at 77,537.72.

Despite the recent rebound, which was largely fueled by a cooling in global bond yields and a recovery in risk appetite across the IT and financial sectors, market sentiment remains fragile. Both benchmark indices are still tracking a weekly loss of approximately 0.6%.

Global Headwinds Persist

The primary concern for market participants continues to be the volatility in global bond yields. While yields saw a temporary dip, they have begun to creep upward again, with the US 10-year Treasury yield hovering around 4.71%. Elevated yields historically pressure emerging-market equities by increasing borrowing costs and diminishing the relative appeal of riskier assets.

Energy prices are also emerging as a significant drag. Brent crude has surged more than 5% this week, trading near $93.82 per barrel. This spike is largely attributed to heightening tensions in the Middle East and concerns over potential supply disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warn that sustained high energy costs could squeeze corporate profit margins and complicate inflation management.

"While short-covering after the recent slump could help markets open higher, the undertone remains cautious due to higher crude prices on the West Asian conflict," said Ankur Punj, Managing Director at Equirus Wealth.

Investor Flow and Market Outlook

Institutional activity on Thursday underscored the mixed sentiment. While Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) turned net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 583 crore, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) stepped in to provide a necessary cushion, net-buying shares worth Rs 3,538 crore.

As the trading day progresses, investors are advised to closely monitor:

  • Geopolitical developments surrounding the US-Iran conflict.
  • Energy price fluctuations and their impact on inflation expectations.
  • Foreign vs. Domestic institutional flows, which will define the short-term liquidity landscape.

Market participants are also keeping a close eye on several key stocks, including Manipal Health, RailTel, Saatvik Green Energy, and Anant Raj. For the latest developments throughout the trading day, you can follow the Sensex stock market updates.
