Satwik-Chirag Overcome Malaysian Scare to Secure Quarterfinal Berth at BWF World Championships

New Delhi: In a high-stakes return to competitive action, India’s star men’s doubles duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, demonstrated nerves of steel to advance to the quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships. The fifth-seeded Indian pair triumphed over Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King in a grueling 82-minute thriller, finishing with a 21-23, 21-19, 21-17 victory.

A Tense Return to the Court

The match carried added uncertainty for the Indian camp. Satwiksairaj entered the arena with his right shoulder heavily taped, marking the pair’s first competitive appearance in nearly three months. Having received a first-round bye and a walkover in the second round, the Indians faced a “cold start” against a pair that was eager to exploit any potential rustiness.

The opening game set the tone for the encounter, characterized by frantic net exchanges and defensive heroics. Despite holding a 17-14 lead, the Indians were pushed to the brink as the Malaysians clawed their way back to force a deuce. Arif and Roy King ultimately claimed the game 23-21, putting the Indian pair under immediate pressure.

The Turning Point

The momentum shifted in the second game, defined by a spectacular moment of resilience from Chirag Shetty. At 8-5, Chirag launched into a full-length dive to retrieve a smash; despite hitting the floor, he scrambled to his feet instantly to finish the point. That grit seemed to galvanize the duo, who managed to edge out the second game 21-19 despite falling behind late in the rallies.

In the decider, the match remained neck-and-neck. With the score tied at 16-16, the Indians upped the tempo, relying on a combination of intelligent net play and explosive smashes. As the Malaysians faltered, Satwik stepped up to close out the match, sealing the win on their second match point.

"We knew it was going to be tough," Satwik said after the match. "I was more worried about my health than the strategy. In practice, the shoulder felt 100%, but competition is very different. I was very happy with the third game—there were no bad signals. It was all positive."

Looking Ahead

The victory serves as a testament to the pair’s mental fortitude, though they are under no illusions about the road ahead. They are now set to face the formidable third-seeded Chinese pair, Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, in a high-profile quarterfinal clash.

A Strong Day for Indian Badminton

The success of Satwik and Chirag was complemented by a brilliant performance from the women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand. The duo stormed into the quarterfinals after a dominant 21-16, 21-12 victory against Japan’s seventh seeds, Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

"The crowd is so amazing," Treesa noted following their win. "In the moments when we were down, the crowd really carried us through it."

However, it was a difficult day for the Indian mixed doubles contingent, as Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto were eliminated after a straight-games loss to China’s Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui.
