Gold Prices Hold Steady, Poised for Third Straight Weekly Gain Amid Dollar Weakness
Gold prices maintained a stable posture on Friday, with the precious metal on track to secure its third consecutive weekly gain. The rally has been fueled by a softening US dollar and strategic efforts by the US Treasury Department to exert control over long-term bond yields.
As of 00:31 GMT, spot gold remained largely unchanged at $4,514.23 per ounce, hovering near its highest level since early June—a milestone reached during the previous trading session. For the week, prices have climbed approximately 3.2%, while US gold futures held steady at $4,571.20.
Currency Dynamics and Treasury Strategy
The primary driver behind gold’s resilience is the weaker US dollar, which makes dollar-denominated commodities more attractive to international buyers holding other currencies. Concurrently, the market is closely monitoring shifts in US Treasury debt management.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated on Thursday that the administration may further expand its government repurchase program for Treasury securities. This follows an announcement on Wednesday that the Treasury Department intends to double the volume of buybacks for longer-dated securities to a minimum of $4 billion per operation, a move designed to stabilize the market.
Federal Reserve Policy in Focus
These fiscal maneuvers have triggered intense speculation regarding the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy. Fed officials have expressed caution, evaluating how Treasury debt management strategies might influence central bank decision-making. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the market currently reflects a 64% probability that the Fed will keep interest rates unchanged in September, with a 36% chance of a rate hike.
Gold, which traditionally does not offer a yield, often faces downward pressure when interest rates rise. However, the latest labor market data shows initial claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, signaling that the US economy remains resilient despite a surprise dip in employment figures reported in July.
Market Impact in India
In the Indian bullion market, investors are closely watching the gold price, which saw Bengaluru’s closing rates on Thursday reach Rs 15,000 per gram for 22-karat gold and Rs 16,400 per gram for 24-karat gold. Silver also remained a focal point, quoted at Rs 2,53,300 per kilogram.
Geopolitical Tensions and Broader Metals
Market sentiment also remains sensitive to global geopolitical developments. Secretary Bessent has announced that the United States is prepared to impose the "toughest sanctions in history" on Iran—a strategy aimed at curbing regional tensions and potentially reducing the necessity for large-scale military interventions.
In the broader precious metals complex, the positive momentum was evident across the board. Spot silver held steady at $68.03 per ounce, while platinum saw a 1.1% increase to $1,846.29. Palladium remained stable at $1,333.11, with all three metals heading toward weekly gains.
Investors are now turning their attention to a flurry of economic data scheduled for release throughout Friday. Key reports from the UK, France, Germany, the European Union, and the US—including retail sales figures and flash manufacturing, services, and composite PMI readings—are expected to provide further clarity on the global economic trajectory.
