"I Sell Stories, Not My Family": Tajdar Amrohi Recalls Why Kamal Amrohi Ended His Relationship With Madhubala
The golden era of Indian cinema was as much about the off-screen dramas of its stars as it was about their iconic performances. Among the most enduring legends of that time is the ethereal Madhubala, whose life was marked by both unparalleled stardom and tragic romantic entanglements.
Recent insights shared by Tajdar Amrohi, son of the celebrated filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, have shed new light on a long-rumored romance between the legendary actress and his father.
A Romance Born from ‘Mahal’
The connection between Kamal Amrohi and Madhubala began during the production of the 1949 cult classic Mahal. According to Tajdar, the two fell in love during the making of the film, years before Kamal would go on to marry the "Tragedy Queen," Meena Kumari.
Tajdar noted that his father held the unique distinction of having worked with the three most iconic beauties of Indian cinema: Madhubala, Meena Kumari, and Hema Malini. However, the intensity of his bond with Madhubala was short-lived, primarily due to an ultimatum that proved to be a breaking point.
The Ultimatum
In a candid interview, Tajdar revealed that the relationship soured when the actress demanded that Kamal divorce his first wife, Sayeda, and sever ties with his children.
"Madhubala wasn’t an ordinary heroine; she was a major star and a producer. She offered to give my father a large sum of money to settle with his wife and children if he would just remove them from his life," Tajdar explained. "She had these strange demands. She wanted him to leave his family."
Kamal Amrohi, however, refused to yield to the pressure. "My father told her, ‘We won’t meet from here on because I sell stories and dialogues, not my children and wife. You want me to leave my wife. That won’t happen. She is a woman of my family,’" Tajdar recalled.
Contrasting Legacies
Tajdar pointed out that unlike Madhubala, who sought to displace the existing family, Meena Kumari—whom Kamal married later—did not impose such conditions. Despite the initial secrecy of Kamal’s marriage to Meena Kumari, the bond between the actress and Kamal’s children eventually blossomed. Kamal’s daughter, Rukhsar, previously shared that their mother, Sayeda, eventually encouraged the children to reach out to Meena Kumari, whom they affectionately came to call "Choti Ammi."
A Star of Many Stories
Tajdar also addressed the broader reputation of the actress, noting that her life was frequently the subject of intense media scrutiny. He acknowledged the well-documented, tumultuous relationship she shared with Dilip Kumar, emphasizing that Madhubala was a complex figure whose personal life was as high-profile as her professional one.
Ultimately, the chapter between the filmmaker and the actress closed, leaving behind a legacy of cinematic masterpieces and a poignant reminder of the personal costs often hidden behind the glamour of the silver screen.
