M6 Traffic Chaos: Multi-Agency Response Underway Following Major Vehicle Fire

Commuters faced severe disruption on the M6 motorway this Friday after a vehicle collision sparked a significant fire on the northbound carriageway. The incident, which occurred between Junction 18 (Middlewich) and Junction 19 (Knutsford), prompted a massive emergency response that has caused hours of gridlock for motorists.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at approximately 7:35 a.m. By mid-afternoon, police, fire crews, and paramedics remained on-site to manage the wreckage and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.

Environmental Concerns

The scale of the incident has necessitated a complex, multi-agency operation. Beyond the immediate task of extinguishing the fire, authorities are now contending with potential long-term ecological consequences.

The Environment Agency has confirmed that its site controllers were deployed rapidly to the scene to assess the situation. Of primary concern is the substantial volume of firewater runoff that has entered the motorway’s drainage system. Officials are currently monitoring the incident for potential risks to the River Dane and nearby brooks, as runoff from firefighting efforts can carry pollutants into local waterways.

"Our team is helping monitor the runoff and investigate for any further environmental damage," a spokesperson for the Environment Agency stated, noting that they are working closely with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service to mitigate the impact.

Travel Impact

While the situation is beginning to stabilize, the impact on regional traffic remains significant. At the height of the incident, drivers faced delays of up to 100 minutes. As of 3:00 p.m., these delays had been reduced to 75 minutes, though approximately seven miles of congestion persisted throughout the afternoon.

Authorities are urging travelers to continue planning their journeys ahead of time and to remain aware of local traffic alerts. Residents in the immediate vicinity of the motorway have been advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure due to smoke and potential chemical residues from the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the initial collision are ongoing.
