The Green Shift: Is Working from Home Actually Better for the Planet?
The normalization of flexible work has emerged as one of the most significant—and perhaps permanent—legacies of the Covid-19 pandemic. Today, more than a third of Australians, including the vast majority of professionals and managers, now spend at least part of their week working away from the office, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
However, the transition to a remote-first culture is not without its hurdles. In Victoria, the push to formalize these arrangements took center stage when former premier Jacinta Allan proposed legislation granting workers the legal right to work from home at least two days a week. Following pushback from the business community and looming electoral pressures, incoming premier Ben Carroll has opted to delay the implementation, pushing the start date from this September to July of next year.
While the policy debate rages on, a broader question remains: does swapping the office for the spare bedroom actually benefit the environment, or are we simply shifting our carbon footprint from the city center to the suburbs?
The Environmental Balancing Act
The environmental impact of remote work is far from black and white. A widely cited US study suggested that full-time remote work could reduce an individual’s personal emissions by as much as 54%. However, experts warn that these gains can be quickly eroded by "rebound effects"—where remote workers, freed from the constraints of an office, increase their social and recreational travel, often using personal vehicles for errands.
Domestically, the data provides a more optimistic outlook. An Australian study indicated that the reduction in commuting emissions significantly outweighs the uptick in residential energy consumption. Researchers estimate that if employees in major capital cities worked from home between 1.5 and four days a week, it could cut national emissions by anywhere from 1.2 million to 5.8 million tonnes. Furthermore, a 2026 report by the International Energy Agency highlights remote work as a key strategy to reduce oil dependency, noting that one day of remote work per week globally could save 24 million tonnes of $CO_2$ annually.
Alan Pears, a senior industry fellow at RMIT and expert in energy efficiency, emphasizes that individual behavior is the "x-factor."
"There will always be huge variation in environmental savings depending on a person’s commute distance, their transport mode, and how they manage their home environment," Pears explains. "For someone who usually commutes by bike or public transport, the carbon savings of staying home are minimal. For a long-distance car commuter, the savings are massive."
The Urban Planning Challenge
Beyond household energy use, there are wider implications for our cities. Associate Professor Dorina Pojani, an urban planning expert at the University of Queensland, notes that while working from home helps reduce peak-hour congestion, it risks creating unintended consequences.
"People might still travel, just at different times," says Pojani. "We are also seeing a trend where people move further away from city centers to more affordable regional areas. If they only visit the office once or twice a week, their commute becomes significantly longer, potentially increasing their overall car reliance."
Moreover, the shift has placed the financial and environmental burden of office climate control onto the employee. Research from the University of Sydney found that while household energy use does rise, it is often more modest than predicted—provided that workers don’t heat or cool entire unused rooms just to provide a workspace.
How to Maximize the Green Dividend
For those looking to ensure their remote work habits are truly sustainable, experts offer several recommendations:
- Ditch the Car for Errands: If you aren’t commuting, resist the urge to drive for every local errand. Walking, cycling, and e-biking are essential to keeping your personal carbon footprint low.
- Optimize Home Energy: Be strategic about your workspace. Heating or cooling a small, occupied room is far more efficient than conditioning an entire house.
- Embrace Co-working: For those who lack the space for a dedicated office or suffer from isolation, neighbourhood co-working spaces are a growing solution. Some experts suggest employers should subsidize these memberships rather than funding large, underutilized city-center offices.
Ultimately, the consensus remains that remote work represents a powerful tool in the fight against climate change, provided it is managed with intentionality. As Pojani notes, "It’s absolutely a positive for society and the environment. We need to strike a win-win balance where both the environment and our quality of life are prioritized."
