Indian Workers in Israel Demand Accountability Following Fatal Stabbing of Caregiver
TEL AVIV – Indian migrant workers in Israel have launched a collective appeal for justice following the brutal murder of Rajeev Acharya, an Indian caregiver who was stabbed to death while performing his professional duties.
The incident, which occurred on July 23, has sent shockwaves through the expatriate community. Israeli authorities have since formally indicted Avior Zaken—the grandson of the elderly couple who employed Mr. Acharya—on charges of premeditated murder. According to reports, the victim was subjected to a sustained and violent attack with a sharp object.
In the wake of the tragedy, members of the Indian diaspora in Israel are calling on the government to ensure a rigorous prosecution of the case. Beyond the criminal proceedings, workers are demanding adequate compensation for the victim’s family and have urged Israeli authorities to bolster the safety and labor protections afforded to foreign nationals, who frequently face significant risks while working in private homes.
The vulnerability of domestic workers, many of whom live and work in isolated settings within their employers’ residences, has become a central concern of the protest.
Diplomatic Response
Nearly a month after the killing, the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv issued a statement via social media, confirming that it is in “close contact with the Israeli authorities.” The embassy noted that a suspect is in custody and that an investigation remains ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Escalating Labor Migration
The tragedy unfolds against a backdrop of rapidly expanding labor ties between New Delhi and Tel Aviv. In May 2023, the two nations signed a landmark agreement to bring tens of thousands of Indian laborers to Israel, specifically targeting the construction and elderly care sectors.
The demand for foreign labor surged following the start of the war in Gaza, when the Israeli government revoked the work permits of thousands of Palestinians. Faced with an acute labor shortage, the Israeli Builders Association lobbied for the recruitment of up to 90,000 workers from India. Drawn by the prospect of higher wages and the ability to send remittances to their families, thousands of Indian citizens have migrated to fill these roles.
However, the migration pipeline has not been without controversy. In 2024, a coalition of India’s largest trade unions formally requested that the government halt the deployment of workers to Israel, citing concerns regarding complicity in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
As of mid-2025, more than 20,000 Indian laborers had arrived in Israel, with bilateral agreements signed in early 2026 projecting that the total workforce could reach 100,000 by 2028. Amid these developments, Indian workers continue to navigate a complex and increasingly dangerous environment, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced protections for those seeking work abroad.
The Indian government has also faced persistent domestic pressure from activists regarding its ongoing military supply shipments to Israel throughout the conflict.
