Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘Khalifa’ Faces Significant Box Office Dip on Day 2

The high-octane Malayalam action drama Khalifa, headlined by superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran and directed by the renowned Vysakh, experienced a noticeable cooling off at the domestic box office during its second day of release. After a promising opening, the film witnessed a 57% drop in earnings, highlighting the volatility of the mid-week-to-weekend transition.

Domestic Performance and Box Office Numbers

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film garnered an estimated India net collection of ₹2.30 crore on its second day. This figure marks a sharp decline from the ₹5.35 crore collected on its opening day. Following this dip, the total India net collection for Khalifa now stands at ₹7.65 crore, with the India gross collection reaching ₹8.90 crore.

Despite the domestic slowdown, the film continues to demonstrate robust momentum in the international circuit. Khalifa added another ₹4 crore to its overseas tally on Friday, bringing its total international gross to a commendable ₹11 crore. When combined with its domestic earnings, the film has achieved a worldwide gross of ₹19.90 crore in just two days.

Occupancy Trends

The second-day theatrical run saw the film screened across 1,441 shows, maintaining an overall occupancy of 32%. Audience turnout displayed a clear growth trajectory throughout the day:

  • Morning shows: 11.33%
  • Afternoon shows: 21.33%
  • Evening shows: 29%
  • Night shows: 46.42%

Kerala remains the stronghold for the project, contributing ₹2.40 crore to the day-two gross. Other regions, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Telugu states, combined for a smaller portion of the day’s total revenue.

A Stylish Cinematic Spectacle

Beyond the numerical performance, Khalifa has been gaining attention for its aesthetic presentation and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s performance as Mambarakkal Aamir Ali. The narrative charts Aamir’s transformation from an unassuming textile merchant to a formidable underworld figure, a journey triggered by his father’s arrest and the subsequent exposure of a secret family history involving gold smuggling. The film also features a notable cameo appearance by screen legend Mohanlal, adding to its star power.

In its Khalifa box office collections analysis, the film has been lauded by critics for its slick production values. While some reviewers noted that the film functions more effectively as a "star-driven spectacle" rather than a hard-hitting political thriller, its stylish execution has largely resonated with audiences seeking a high-energy entertainer.

As the weekend progresses, trade analysts will be watching closely to see if the film can leverage its positive word-of-mouth and strong overseas performance to stabilize its domestic footing.
