‘Blown away and hammered’: Ex-England captain says Pakistan lack ‘spirit’ after embarrassing defeat | Cricket News

"Absolutely Blown Away": Michael Vaughan Blasts Pakistan Following Headingley Debacle

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has delivered a scathing assessment of the Pakistan Test team, describing their performance in the series opener at Headingley as "timid" and devoid of the competitive fire historically associated with the nation’s cricket.

England dominated the first Test, clinching a comprehensive innings-and-103-run victory in less than three days. The tourists were outclassed in every department, managing scores of just 171 and 135 as their batting lineup crumbled under the pressure of England’s disciplined pace attack. Across the entire match, Pakistan spent a mere 85.4 overs at the crease, highlighting a lack of resistance that left onlookers and pundits stunned.

A Lack of "Spirit and Fight"

Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, an audibly disappointed Vaughan expressed his concern over the nature of the defeat.

“They’ve been absolutely blown away. They’ve been hammered. I’ve never seen them look so timid,” Vaughan remarked. “I look at this side and feel quite sad watching them this week. I’ve seen many Pakistan sides play, and this side just seems to be lacking all that spirit and fight we’ve come accustomed to seeing.”

Beyond the emotional intensity, Vaughan was critical of the team’s strategic approach and overall caliber. “The tactical side wasn’t there. The skill level and the class between the sides, Pakistan look a long way short,” he added, urging the squad to use the intense criticism they are currently facing as fuel to improve before the second Test.

England’s Dominance

England’s commanding performance signaled a strong start to a new era, with Joe Root resuming the captaincy following the retirement of Ben Stokes and the departure of coach Brendon McCullum.

The hosts laid the groundwork for victory by posting a formidable 409, driven by vital contributions from Harry Brook (91), Jordan Cox (73), Joe Root (66), and Dan Lawrence (51).

With the bat setting the platform, the English bowlers ensured the result was never in doubt. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue were the chief destroyers, finishing with matching hauls of eight wickets in the match. Robinson, who finished with figures of 8/80, was named Player of the Match, while Tongue’s clinical spell yielded 8/89. Even as Jofra Archer provided consistent hostility, it was the clinical accuracy of the Robinson-Tongue duo that left the Pakistan lineup effectively dismantled.

Looking Ahead

The result leaves Pakistan facing an uphill battle as they look to salvage the three-match series. The team now has a few days to regroup at the nets before the second Test gets underway at Lord’s this coming Thursday.

For many fans, the performance has been embarrassing, leaving the touring side with the tall task of reclaiming their reputation at the "Home of Cricket." England, meanwhile, will look to maintain their momentum and seal the series advantage in London.
