"Stay Away from Captaincy": Wasim Jaffer’s Bold Advice to Rishabh Pant After Delhi Capitals Return

The landscape of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise has shifted significantly following the high-profile return of star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. While fans are celebrating the homecoming of the dynamic 28-year-old, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has issued a stark warning regarding the player’s future responsibilities: stay away from the captaincy.

A Fresh Start or a Burden?

Pant’s return to Delhi was formalized via a trade deal with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following the 2026 IPL season. The move saw Pant move back to the capital for Rs 15 crore—a notable Rs 12 crore pay cut from his previous salary—while left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav headed to Lucknow in a deal valued at Rs 13.50 crore.

Despite the excitement surrounding his homecoming, Jaffer believes that taking on the mantle of leadership would be a strategic error for the talented batter. Reflecting on Pant’s two-year tenure as captain of LSG—during which the team finished seventh in 2025 and last in 2026—Jaffer suggested that the weight of captaincy has negatively impacted Pant’s individual output.

Prioritizing Form Over Leadership

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer emphasized that Pant’s primary goal should be reclaiming his spot in the Indian national squad rather than managing franchise politics.

"If Delhi Capitals even offer him the captaincy, I think it is better for him to say no," Jaffer stated. "He should play purely as a specialist batter. His performance has dipped, and he needs to focus on making his way back into India’s T20I and ODI setups. Captaincy is not his current priority, nor is he part of the national leadership group right now."

Jaffer noted that the dual burden of wicketkeeping and leading a franchise is immense, often compounding the pressures from owners, fans, and media. "He needs to put the leadership talk aside and focus on winning matches as a batter. That is what is best for Rishabh Pant right now," he added.

The Leadership Conundrum at Delhi Capitals

The Capitals are currently at a crossroads. Under the guidance of new head coach Sourav Ganguly, the franchise is looking to move past a disappointing 2026 campaign where they finished sixth, missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season under Axar Patel’s leadership.

While Axar’s tenure as captain has drawn scrutiny due to inconsistent results, the franchise faces limited options in the upcoming mini-auction. Jaffer pointed toward KL Rahul as a more suitable candidate if the team decides a change is necessary. Drawing parallels to Rahul’s recent approach, Jaffer noted that the latter has appeared to flourish by focusing on his role as a player, unburdened by the relentless demands of captaincy.

As the Delhi Capitals prepare for the next season, the management will have to weigh the temptation of leaning on a "star" name like Pant against the tactical wisdom of protecting their most explosive asset from the burnout that often accompanies the captain’s armband.
