Building an Athlete

The transition to goalkeeper at the 2015 sub-junior nationals in Ranchi proved to be a turning point. Vandana, a coach at the Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy who witnessed her early development, recalls an energetic, raw talent. Under the academy’s wing, Bichu’s latent potential began to shine.

Her background in football proved to be her "secret weapon." The mechanics of diving, the coordination required for kicking, and the ability to get back on one’s feet quickly—skills honed on the football pitch—translated seamlessly to the hockey goal. "Because of my football background, I already understood many of those movements," Bichu explained. "I could focus on learning goalkeeping-specific things like positioning and body shape."

The Mentor and the Moment

Perhaps the most crucial component of her rise has been the mentorship of India’s stalwart goalkeeper, Savita Punia. Having observed Bichu since her junior years, Savita recognized more than just technical ability; she recognized a rare, sincere dedication to the craft.

That dedication culminated in a defining moment at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen. With the World Cup second round on the line and England launching a ferocious final assault, it was the once-reluctant goalie who stood firm. Her last-gasp save secured a draw and punched India’s ticket to the next stage, a moment celebrated with immense pride by Savita from the sidelines.
