From Door-to-Door Struggles to Stardom: The Making of Vivek Oberoi’s Iconic Debut
The path to Bollywood stardom is rarely a straight line, even for the children of established industry veterans. In a recent, candid interview, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi reflected on the early days of his son Vivek Oberoi’s career, revealing the intense efforts he invested to help his son secure his breakthrough role in Ram Gopal Varma’s 2002 cult classic, Company.
A Father’s Dedication
Speaking with Nidhi Vasandani, Suresh Oberoi opened up about the emotional and professional labor involved in launching his son’s career. "I had to struggle for him again, went door to door," the senior actor admitted. He recounted how he personally championed his son, revisiting the days when he had to hustle for his own roles.
Suresh, who was working with director Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) at the time, saw an opportunity when the filmmaker began scouting for talent for Company. After RGV expressed interest, Suresh facilitated a screening of Vivek’s acting tape from his time at an institute. According to Suresh, the director was immediately impressed by the young actor’s screen presence, an experience that left the proud father moved to tears.
Differing Perspectives on the "Struggle"
While Suresh Oberoi recalls a father’s protective involvement, Vivek Oberoi has previously shared a different narrative regarding his entry into the industry. In an interview with India Today, the Masti star emphasized that he was determined to carve his own path, even going so far as to drop his famous surname.
"I went everywhere as Vivek Anand," the actor explained. "I went to production offices, waited for 6 to 10 hours in audition queues." Vivek noted that he purposefully turned down his father’s production house to ensure his success was built on his own merit.
He further detailed his grueling pursuit of the Company role, revealing that RGV initially rejected him, citing that he appeared "too polished" for the gritty underworld drama. Refusing to give up, Vivek spent three weeks living in a local slum and working with a struggling photographer to build a portfolio that captured the raw intensity of the character. When he returned to RGV’s office transformed, the director was finally convinced to cast him.
A Legacy of Excellence
Despite the varied accounts of how he secured his big break, there is no denying the impact Vivek made with his debut. While Suresh Oberoi has expressed a special fondness for his son’s performance in the romantic drama Saathiya, he remains deeply proud of the grit Vivek displayed in Company.
Now, decades after his debut, Vivek Oberoi continues to remain a significant force in Indian cinema. The actor is currently gearing up for one of his most ambitious roles yet: he will be seen in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated adaptation of the Ramayana, starring alongside Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi. Whether through his father’s connections or his own relentless determination, Vivek has undoubtedly secured a lasting legacy in the hearts of the audience.
