Renowned Musician Eithne Vallely Killed in Armagh Collision

Tributes have poured in for the celebrated cultural figure following a tragic road accident in County Armagh on Friday morning.

Eithne Vallely, an 81-year-old musician and pillar of the Irish traditional music community, has died after being struck by a truck in the Portadown Road area.

Emergency services, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene on Friday morning. Despite the immediate medical assistance provided, authorities confirmed that Mrs. Vallely was pronounced deceased at the location. The Portadown Road, which was closed to traffic for several hours to allow for a forensic examination, has since been fully reopened.

Following the news of the musician Eithne Vallely’s death, local leaders and members of the arts community expressed their deep shock and sorrow.

Dáire Hughes, the Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh, led the tributes, describing her as a "giant of Irish cultural life."

"Eithne was a giant of Irish cultural life in Armagh and across Ireland – a pioneering musician," Mr. Hughes said. "Her decades of contribution to music and cultural expression cannot be overstated, evidenced by her countless awards and honours."

A lifelong devotee to her craft, Mrs. Vallely’s musical journey began as a child, when she first mastered the tin whistle in primary school. Her talent eventually expanded to encompass the piano and violin, among other instruments. Beyond her own performances, she was a dedicated archivist, having spent much of her life collecting and recording traditional Irish music.

Her most enduring contribution to the arts was the establishment of the Armagh Pipers Club, which she co-founded alongside her husband, Brian. Through the club, she played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting traditional music, fostering a deep passion for the arts in her own children, grandchildren, and the wider community.

"Eithne was not only a great musician, but she had been collecting and recording traditional music from an early age," Mr. Hughes added. "Her legacy will live on, through them and the countless others she inspired. My sincerest condolences to Eithne’s husband, Brian, her children, grandchildren and the wider Vallely clan."

The PSNI is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. Detective Inspector Stewart of the Collision Investigation Unit has issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the Portadown Road area on Friday morning.

Those with information are asked to contact the police by using the witness appeal form at reporting.psni.police.uk/appeals, quoting reference 247 21/08/26, or by calling 101.
