Historic Bronze: Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand End India’s 13-Year Wait at BWF World Championships

Indian badminton stars Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have etched their names in the history books, securing a bronze medal at the BWF World Championships. Despite a hard-fought defeat in the semifinals on Saturday, the duo’s remarkable performance in the tournament marks a watershed moment for Indian women’s doubles.

The Indian pair, who had captured headlines globally with a sensational quarterfinal upset, eventually succumbed to the top-seeded Chinese duo of Tan Ning and Liu Sheng Shu. In a grueling 70-minute encounter, the Indians fought valiantly before the match concluded with a scoreline of 21-18, 13-21, 8-21.

A Promising Start

The match began with immense promise as Treesa and Gayatri displayed tactical maturity and composure. Facing the formidable Chinese top seeds, the Indians held their ground in a high-octane opening game. By trading points and maintaining pressure during the critical closing exchanges, they clinched the first game 21-18, signaling their intent to reach the tournament final.

However, the tide turned in the second game. Tan and Liu, adjusting their strategy, increased the pace of the rallies and began to dictate play from the front court. Struggling to recapture the rhythm that defined their early success, the Indian pair conceded the second game 13-21, forcing the contest into a deciding third set.

Chinese Dominance in the Decider

In the final game, the experience of the Chinese top seeds proved decisive. Tan and Liu established an early lead, pinning the Indian duo back with precision and relentless aggression. Despite Treesa and Gayatri’s attempts to bridge the gap, the Chinese pair remained clinical, closing the set 21-8 to punch their ticket to the final.

A Legacy-Defining Achievement

While the semifinal loss ends their bid for the championship title, the duo departs with a historic achievement. This bronze medal represents the first time an Indian women’s doubles team has stood on the podium at the BWF World Championships in 13 years.

The last—and only other—time India claimed a medal in this category was in 2011, when the legendary pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa achieved the feat.

The journey to this historic bronze was paved with grit. Earlier in the tournament, Treesa and Gayatri pulled off one of the greatest victories of their careers by overcoming world No. 4 pair Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian. After dropping the first game, they rallied back with immense mental toughness to win the quarterfinal 16-21, 21-15, 21-13.

By breaking the 13-year dry spell, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have not only elevated their own stature on the global stage but have also provided a massive boost to the future of Indian women’s badminton.
