Inside the Battlefield: Infinity Ward Details Movement and Map Design for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

The highly anticipated "Call of Duty season" has officially arrived. With the conclusion of the Call of Duty: NEXT event, players are finally getting their hands on the latest installment in the storied franchise. As the first beta weekend rolls out, the community is getting a first look at the new tactical mechanics and the striking Korean Peninsula setting of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

To shed light on the development of this new chapter, we sat down with Infinity Ward’s creative team—including Multiplayer Creative Director Geoff Smith, Technical Designer Jack Hoppus, and Art Director Sergio Gill—to discuss the philosophy behind their most ambitious multiplayer experience yet.

A New Theater of War

The team at Infinity Ward selected the Korean Peninsula as the backdrop for Modern Warfare 4 to leverage its distinct visual identity and the inherent geopolitical tension of the region.

"We wanted to make it feel as current as possible," says Smith. The team drew inspiration from modern Korean culture, integrating elements like digital billboards, vibrant vending machines, and local architecture into their map layouts. To maintain authenticity, the developers sent scan teams directly to South Korea to capture real-world environments, which were then adapted to fit the frantic, fast-paced needs of Call of Duty multiplayer.

Fluidity Meets Grounded Combat

One of the core challenges for the studio was evolving the game’s movement without sacrificing the "grounded" military feel that the Modern Warfare series is known for. According to Hoppus, the team focused on reducing "cognitive load" by streamlining map design. By carefully placing cover and removing unnecessary clutter, the developers have created an environment where players can move more decisively.

The game introduces new traversal options, such as intuitive pipe climbing and a "mantle slide" that allows players to maintain momentum while keeping their weapons ready. "You find yourself sliding across the hood [of a car] like an action hero," says Hoppus. "It looks pretty sick."

Balancing the Experience

The development team faces a constant tug-of-war between catering to competitive, high-level players and ensuring that new arrivals find the game intuitive. By inviting pro players and content creators for early playtesting, Infinity Ward has been able to fine-tune systems that allow for high-skill expression—like creative flank routes—while keeping the core gameplay loop accessible.

For those eager to dive into these new environments, the Modern Warfare 4 beta is already underway.

Beta Schedule and Availability

Players can jump into the action across two distinct windows:

  • Weekend One (Early Access): August 21 – August 25. Available for those who pre-ordered on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, or PC.
  • Weekend Two (Open Beta): August 28 – September 1. Open to all players across all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, regardless of pre-order status.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on October 23, 2026. Whether you are a veteran looking to master the new traversal mechanics or a newcomer ready to explore the neon-lit streets of Korea, the next evolution of Call of Duty is officially here.
