From Mumbai Beats to London Streets: The Evolution of DJ Toons

When DJ Toons touched down in London in 2022, he brought with him over a decade of high-octane experience from the Indian club circuit. Having mastered the nuances of Bollywood, commercial hits, and the hypnotic rhythms of psy-trance, he wasted no time making his mark abroad. In fact, he secured his first UK booking through Bombay Funkadelic just 24 hours after his arrival, signaling the start of a new chapter in his musical journey.

Over the past four years, Toons has become a fixture in London’s vibrant South Asian nightlife scene. Transitioning between intimate venues and massive festival-style crowds, he has honed a philosophy rooted in adaptability. "A 300-person space and a 1,500-person space ask for the same thing from me," Toons explains. "Read what’s in front of you and decide what it needs next. The only thing that changes is how much margin there is to be wrong."

The Art of the Sonic Bridge

Toons is perhaps best known for his ability to weave together seemingly disparate soundscapes. His sets are characterized by seamless genre-blending; a notable example occurred in Pattaya, where he transitioned from a tech-house track—specifically Cloonee and InntRaw’s "Stephanie"—directly into the viral Telugu hit "Oo Antava Mama." By leveraging the structural energy of the tech-house drop, he managed to carry the momentum into the regional film song, creating a cohesive, high-energy experience.

Beyond his open-format Bollywood sets, Toons operates under the psy-trance alias DJ Toons, where he experiments with repetition and textural shifts. His production work demonstrates a deep respect for sound design, such as his remix of the classic "Dum Maaro Dum." Rather than utilizing cultural elements as mere aesthetic garnish, Toons integrates sonic motifs like bell sounds into the very architecture of the track’s transitions and phrase endings.

Innovation Through Accessibility

One of the most transformative moments in his career took place at the Pragna Mandir School for visually impaired students in Dang, Gujarat. Performing a set without the benefit of visual cues to operate his equipment, Toons found himself deeply affected by the constraints of modern DJ gear. This experience sparked a new mission: advocating for and conceptualizing how DJ technology could be made more accessible to those who cannot rely on sight.

As he looks to the future, Toons is focused on synthesizing the disparate facets of his career. By bridging the gap between his high-energy Bollywood sets and the more technical, introspective world of psy-trance, he continues to prove that his sound is not just travel-ready—it is evolving. Whether he is controlling a London club or exploring new frontiers in production, Toons remains an artist dedicated to reading the room and redefining the boundaries of the DJ booth.
