Double Fine Secures Full Independence: Studio Retains Rights to Entire Back Catalogue Post-Xbox Split

In a significant development for the gaming industry, beloved independent developer Double Fine has officially confirmed that it now holds—or will shortly finalize the transfer of—the intellectual property (IP) and publishing rights to every title developed during its seven-year tenure under Microsoft’s Xbox division.

The news was confirmed by studio founder and CEO Tim Schafer during a recent appearance on the Kinda Funny Games podcast. Responding to fan inquiries regarding whether purchasing older titles like the acclaimed Psychonauts 2 actually benefits the studio, Schafer provided a clear, reassuring answer.

"The transfer of the IP came back to us, and we get the publishing rights back to all our games," Schafer explained. While he noted that the administrative handover for a portion of the titles remains in a transitionary phase due to the complexities of corporate processing, the long-term outlook is firmly in the studio’s favor.

"If you’re curious, buying any of our games helps support the studio," Schafer added, emphasizing the financial importance of the catalogue. "We can turn that money into revenue that helps us extend that runway."

Navigating a New Era

This clarity comes as the dust settles on a tumultuous period for Microsoft’s gaming division. Following a massive corporate restructuring announced in July—which saw approximately 3,200 roles impacted across the Xbox organization—Double Fine was one of several studios spun back out into independence.

The transition was not without its costs. To ensure a sustainable future as an independent entity, Double Fine was forced to lay off roughly 25% of its 90-person workforce. Studio leadership characterized these difficult cuts as a necessary measure to reach a size that the team could independently maintain moving forward. Similar to Double Fine, Compulsion Games—the studio behind We Happy Few and the upcoming South of Midnight—has also confirmed that it has retained ownership of its IP following its departure from the Xbox umbrella.

Reviving the "Amnesia Fortnight" Spirit

With its autonomy restored, Double Fine is wasting no time in looking toward the future. During the same interview, Schafer revealed that the studio plans to revive its legendary "Amnesia Fortnight" game jam.

The initiative will be launched via a Kickstarter campaign, inviting fans and backers to vote on which developer prototypes will be greenlit to become the studio’s next full-scale project. The event is slated to run from August 31 through most of September, signaling a return to the community-focused development process that helped define the studio’s early success.

This move marks a definitive chapter for Double Fine. As the studio navigates the challenges of regaining its independence, the retention of its Double Fine IP and publishing rights provides a vital financial lifeline and creative foundation as it prepares to embark on its next creative endeavor.
