Dalal Street Outlook: Markets Eye Stability After Two-Week Slide as Geopolitical Tensions Loom

Following a challenging two-week stretch that saw domestic indices under pressure, Indian equity markets are poised for a period of consolidation. Analysts suggest that while a marginal recovery may be on the horizon, investor sentiment remains tethered to external volatility, specifically escalating geopolitical tensions and the persistent strength of global energy prices.

The Macroeconomic Headwinds

Market participants are keeping a wary eye on Brent crude oil prices, which have remained firmly anchored above the $90-per-barrel threshold. According to Siddhartha Khemka, Head of Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd, this price level, combined with ongoing geopolitical instability, remains the primary hurdle for a sustained market rally.

"After two weeks of correction in the Nifty, Indian equity markets could consolidate, with marginal recovery expected in the near term," Khemka noted.

Adding to the global anxiety is the unresolved standoff between the United States and Iran. With the expiration of the 60-day agreement failing to yield a lasting settlement, the Strait of Hormuz has once again become a focal point of geopolitical risk, threatening the stability of global energy supply chains.

The "Jackson Hole" Effect

Beyond energy costs, the global financial landscape is bracing for significant policy signals from the United States. All eyes are currently fixed on the Jackson Hole symposium. Investors are particularly eager to dissect comments from the Federal Reserve regarding the future trajectory of interest rates.

"Global markets head into the coming week with investor attention centred on three key themes: the Federal Reserve’s policy trajectory, Nvidia’s quarterly results, and the unresolved US-Iran conflict," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

Experts suggest that the Fed’s messaging will be critical, especially as the central bank attempts to balance the risks of persistent inflation against signs of a cooling labor market. Data releases scheduled for the coming week—including US GDP estimates, durable goods orders, and consumer confidence reports—will be pivotal in providing a clearer picture of the US economy’s resilience.

Resilience in Domestic Flows

Despite the recent downward trend—which saw the BSE Sensex shed 468.42 points (0.60%) and the NSE Nifty dip 114 points (0.46%) last week—there remains a silver lining in the form of robust liquidity.

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) have shown continued faith in the Dalal Street ecosystem, accelerating their buying spree to reach a net investment of Rs 23,544 crore so far in August. Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking Ltd, noted that while the focus remains on global cues, these strong FPI flows and domestic liquidity conditions will continue to be critical monitorables as the market attempts to find its footing this week.

As investors navigate this complex environment, the combination of cautious optimism and external risk management is expected to dictate the immediate trading sessions.
