Seven Dead Following Tragic High-Speed Collision on A66

A local community is in mourning after a catastrophic collision near Middlesbrough in the early hours of Saturday morning (August 22) claimed the lives of seven individuals, including two serving police officers.

The tragic incident, which occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. on the A66, prompted a somber Sky News broadcast as the network broke the latest details regarding the victims.

Victims Identified

Authorities have now released the names of the five young men who were traveling in a Volkswagen Passat that collided with police transport. They have been identified as:

  • Michael Robert Cahill, 23
  • Jakub Matusiak, 23
  • Makai Saddington, 18
  • Theo Rae, 17
  • Cole Robert Worthy, 17

The two officers who lost their lives in the collision were 37-year-old PC Matthew Blades and 38-year-old PC Tom Clough.

The Sequence of Events

According to information provided to Sky News, the tragedy unfolded after police flagged the Volkswagen Passat as a suspicious vehicle, initiating a pursuit through the streets of Middlesbrough. Footage recovered from a doorbell camera appears to capture the vehicle speeding through residential areas just minutes before the crash.

It is understood that the primary police pursuit was abandoned shortly before the tragedy occurred. As the Passat moved onto the A66, it reportedly entered the wrong side of the road. It then collided with a marked, armed-response police vehicle that was traveling correctly in the opposite direction.

The impact was fatal for all seven individuals involved in the crash.

Community in Shock

Reporting live from Middlesbrough, Sky News correspondent Katie Barnfield noted that the identification of the victims has provided a harrowing sense of finality for the families involved.

"We’ve been reflecting on the community, reeling in the police community, but in the wider community too," the network stated during the broadcast.

The incident has triggered an extensive investigation, with officials working to piece together the final moments of the pursuit and the circumstances leading up to the collision. As the investigation continues, authorities have expressed their deepest condolences to the families of both the teenagers and the two officers killed in the line of duty.
