Apple Set to Refresh iMac Lineup with M6 Chip and New Color Palette Before Year’s End

Apple is preparing to revitalize its all-in-one desktop offering. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is on track to launch a refreshed iMac featuring the highly anticipated M6 chipset before the close of 2026.

The upcoming release marks another chapter in the iMac’s sporadic update cycle. Historically, the desktop has been selective about its silicon, skipping both the M2 and M5 chip families entirely. Despite ongoing consumer demand for a larger screen variant—which Apple currently addresses by steering high-end users toward a Mac Studio or Mac mini paired with a Studio Display—the 24-inch form factor remains the company’s primary focus for this line.

What to Expect: Performance and Aesthetics

The shift to the M6 chip is arguably the most significant aspect of this update. Industry insiders expect the M6 to be the first Mac processor built on a cutting-edge 2nm manufacturing process. Interestingly, reports suggest that Apple may forgo the rollout of M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra variants, opting instead to fast-track the development of the forthcoming M7 chip family.

Beyond raw performance, Apple plans to introduce a refreshed aesthetic. While specific details remain under wraps, Gurman confirmed that the new models will debut with “some new color options.” This follows Apple’s strategy from the 2024 M4 refresh, where the company retained the iconic seven-color lineup but adjusted the specific shades and intensity of the hues.

A Busy Autumn for the Mac

The impending iMac launch is just one piece of a broader, aggressive hardware strategy for the fall. Apple is reportedly readying a significant overhaul of its professional-grade machines, signaling a potentially massive quarter for the Mac division.

Other devices currently in the pipeline include:

  • MacBook Pro: Highly anticipated models featuring redesigned touchscreens and advanced Tandem OLED display technology.
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro: A base-model refresh powered by the M6 chip.
  • Mac Studio: An update incorporating the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips, pending component supply availability.
  • Mac mini: A potential refresh featuring the M6 chip and M5 Pro configurations, though this may arrive slightly later in the cycle.

For those who have been holding out for a desktop upgrade, the wait appears to be nearly over. With all signs pointing to a launch window in the coming months, consumers should be able to get their hands on the latest M6-powered iMac before the end of the year.
